Release hatch question
Hey guys I have a question about my trunk mechanism. I recently bought a pair of new shocks for my trunk since the one I had were done for. After installing them, I found myself stuck with the same problem as before. My struts work perfectly but when I release my trunk, As soon as the release hatch reaches it's maximum reach, it pulls the trunk back down with it. so i have to press my hatch release switch, jump out of the car and run to the trunk before it completely releases or I will have to unlock it again with my key and grab it before it goes back down again. Is my mechanism done for or is it just a stupid mistake from G.M? I can't believe that's the way it should work... thanks.

Re: Release hatch question
Not the way it's supposed to work. Mine did the same thing as well, but I don't remember what hubby did to fix it. Maybe someone else can help with that.

Re: Release hatch question
I believe they have lift supports with different lift strengths? One for with a spoiler and one without. I've got a convertible so even though I replaced both of trunk lifts it's a different animal. Worth checking!

Re: Release hatch question
Yeah, you probably have the wrong strength lifters.
Or perhaps your hatch pulldown unit is mounted a little to low, so it doesn't push the hatch that tiny bit up enough to have it pop up.

Re: Release hatch question
The parts dealer that sold me the struts specified that they were for a firebird 1988 hatchback with spoiler and no wiper. This is what I have, except it's a trans am gta. I will mount the motor a little higher and see if it helps, but I highly doubt it

Re: Release hatch question

I think the parts guy gave you the runaround, check the part no. and match it up.
I recently went with a Hawks Fiberglass Spoiler and when I pop the hatch it FLY'S OPEN so hard I'm afraid the hatch is going to break,so I have to go with the weaker struts.

Re: Release hatch question
Alright I'll get on their website and put in the number part number, see if it's the right type of struts

Re: Release hatch question
Turns out they are the right ones but I tried them today, they worked perfect under the hot sun, but then the clouds came and they got just enough weaker so the motor would pull it back down again... I think they only work fine when mit's really hot or sunny weird...
