Tach

I'm looking to switch the gauges out of my 2.8L with some better ones (>85 mph, tach, no idiot lights). I havn't found the new ones yet, but I have a question anyway.
How will the tach hook up? Is it like installing aftermarket tachs (tying the pickup wire to a coil wire), or does it plug into the computer somehow? If it doesn't tie into the computer, how do you calibrate it to work on a 6 cylinder?
Thanx
