I thought that maybe a capacitor of some sort, so the charge would slowly dissapate from the capacitor. Not sure how, or where to hook it up though.

Yeah, a capacitor is what you need as a "simple" solution - or you could make a circuit like in this article:

Hey guys,I just got my new wiring harness from Centech wiring for my new gauge panle and I read this article while reading the catolog that came with the kit. They sell alot of wiring products for street rods. They sell what they call a fader box that hooks up the the interior lights, when you open the door the interior light come on and then after you shut the door the lights fade out after 8 seconds.Just what you are looking for.here is there # 1 610-754-0720

I am gathering the required components to make the circuit. I'll let everyone know how I fare. The schematic doesnt look hard at all, so I dont think I'll have a problem wiring it all up.

kinda similar to the fader box, my dad says he can get me a relay that will perform the same function and allow the fade-out time to be adjusted. Im still skeptical, but sounds good. will give info when I get it

Umm, i believe that the interior lights are DC powered.

Therefore a cap, resistor network prolly wont work.

Not 100% ( Cant member sh*t from school )

: D

Capicators do not pass DC current, thats what they make your stereo filters out of.

got my centech fader today in the mail...

the four wires are (red)+12 in, (black)ground in, (white)door switch (ground when open), and a (yellow) +12 to the lightbulb.

problem is that i want all three lights to fade, not just the dome, the dome only ould be a peice of cake...

the bulbs get +12v all the time, only when the doors open or the dome switch is on do they get a ground to complete the circuit. the problem with that is that on the fader, the ground is constant and the +12v is switched.

I think i'm gonna trace the oranger power wires from all three bulbs back to the fuse block, cut'em off and hook'em up to the yellow positive of the fader...that should mean that i just need to wire both door switches to the white wire on the fader and ground the white wires comming from the bulbs. The problem is that my dome light is either going to function with the dimmer or not at all, so i'm lookin at a how i'm gonna get past having the dome switch fade it without buying a seperate fader for each door...

any ideas are welcome

Not sure but you may only need to wire it to the passanger door switch, you may want to confirm that.

Kirkfry, you have it backwards. Capacitors work on DC, they wont just wire up to an AC circuit like a DC one. For an AC circuit to have a capacitor, you would also need some sort of electronics that reverses polarity at the proper frequency. Also, using a capacitor would probably work, but it would not give you a delay after the door is shut. The light would immediately start to fade. The only way to adjust it would be to adjust the time it takes to fade completely out, by using either a bigger capacitor, or more capacitors (accomplishes the same thing either way).

i tried the capicator theory. i don't remember how many farad it was. but i know it didn't do a dang thing and it was the biggest cap i could find at all the local electronic spectialy stores. so you would need a huge cap!!
