How can I fix a broken seatbelt?

My passenger side stock seatbelt in my Formula is broke. The belt does not pull tightly anymore, it just sits loosely. What should I do?

mine does the same thing in my GTA. thing that sucks is i was told by a bodyshop, that you have to replace it which also means pulling the headliner. i am just letting mine go until i decide to do 4th gen seats/belts. if you find an easier way, let me know

Got to replace it. Did mine in my 89, wasn't too hard the headliner was already a bit ripped in that area anyway so I didn't pull it. They'll more than likely want way to much money for a new one at a dealer, check the classifieds there is probably a good deal waiting.

You gotta replace it, there is no other option. I don't remember any way to safely take apart the pieces. I personally would rather buy new and feel safe than have something break on me that I really did not fix right. not worth the risk.

I had this problem on the retractor and it turned out to be the cover for the retractor spring popped off. I rewound the spring and installed the cover with a little adhesive to prevent this from happening in the future. You still have to get the headliner down either way.

To pull the headliner & remove the belt would take me about a half an hour.

here is what you do:
-remove the plastic trim strips around the window opening.
-remove the dome light asm
-Remove the rear speaker panels (screw is hidden in clothes hanger), lift up on them to get them to realease.
-Remove the screws to the rear hatch area up top
-Remove the rear trim piece on the celing (4 screws).
-remove the sunvisors.

Then remove the seatbelts.

I think thats about it.

When I do mine, I let the headliner rest on the rear trim pieces to give it support. Removing the sunvisors last gives it support from all 4 corners until your ready to take it down.

Thanks for the advice. I hate the idea of driving without woking belts. My headliner is in bad condition, so I would like to replace it while I'm at it. I've seen kits at PepBoys, but I don't know if they are any good. Anyone know the best way to do this? Best adhesives?

I agree with "dd". You can fix that seatbelt retractor your self. Just take it apart and rewind the metal tension spring and replace the plastic cap. Now the headline is really 2 choices. either find a used one in mint condition which is hard ti do or recover what you got. Most fabric stores sell the material really cheap and just buy the adhesive , measure, stretch, adhear and install. Take your time.

i had the same problem, i just took out my sagging t top headliner and took out all of the old tired third gen seatbelts and replaced them with belts out of a 98 firebird, along with the seats. its a real interior upgrade, the seat belts sit alot differently if you upgrade you will be happy. i paid 60 bucks for all of the seatbelts and 200 bucks for the cloth seats.
