Interior Dye Spray

Has anyone used the Dye sprays you can get out of summit to change your interior color? Can it be used on the carpet as well as the seats? How well does it work? How well does it last? Does it look original or does it look like you colored it on with a marker??? Any pictures? Thanks, thinking of changing interior to black but dont want to spend a ton of money.

I used a similar spray on my interior. It was not the same and at the time I did not realize that there was a primer that neaded to be applied first. Without the primer it peals pretty easily but it looks great while it lasts. The brand I used actually looked better than the plastic that was already black. There is also a spray that is designed just for the carpet it works better than the other dye. Be sure to use the primer on the plastic and you should be happy with the results.

I've always had good luck with Duplicolor dyes. They also have a better spray tip/pattern than regular spray cans giving you better coverage. Autozone is the only place that carries it where I live.
To add to the primer suggestion,, it's a good idea to clean the plastic well with laquer thinner or acetone and 'rough' the plastic with a scotch brite pad (and not the one from the kitchen sink )to further help adhesion.
You can also use Bulldog (or something similar) adhesion promoter to help too.

I used VHT vinyl/plastic dye on all my interior panels (changed from grey to black). I have had excellent results for over two years without peeling and I didn't use a plastic primer, BUT it is absolutely critical that those parts are spotless. I mean I cleaned mine twice with Marine Clean from POR-15. When I thought it was clean, I cleaned it one more time for good measure. I used a hair drier to make sure the parts were absolutely dry. Then a tack rag to remove traces of dust, and finally you have to have good spray control. Use a 50% overlap, starting and finshing before the and after the part, and use many, many (did I say many?) light mist coats, until the part has the paint coverage you want. And yes, most vinyl/plastic dyes work on carpets, but you have to make sure you get good thread penetration or it will rub off with use.

So its pretty much possible to change out the entire interior if you wanted? I would want to go from gray to black. Seats, Carpets, Door panels, Headliner? Or do you think it would look like crap?

Yes, it is possible, but I personally wouldn't do the seats because of the constant pressure and rubbing. I don't have any experience with seats. I changed every sigle plastic interior piece from grey to black and it looks great. Then again if you think about it nothing ever rubs the interior plastic pieces except maybe for your elbow on the center console cover.

Yeah, i agree, leave the seats to an upolstery place, the dye probably last too long. hmmm, unless maybe you took off the fabric and dyed them using Rit fabric dye which you can find at most stores. Don't know how good that will hold up, but if you could afford to get them reupolstered give it a try it could save you some coin. I'm not too sure about just spraying the carpet, wherever you have a lot of contact with feet you could potentially have the same problem as with the seats. I'd go for a replacement carpet kit, at least the front anyway. Just my 2 cents

Oh, and on the headliner go to a fabric store and look for some thick, foam-backed fabric, get some 3M interior adhesive spray and you can recover the headliner.

what if you had black seats that just need to be redyed to get their true black again. Woul it rub off onto your cloths? My nightRider seats are turning a realy dark green color, I would like just to be able to spray them black, again they were black from the factory, i just want to "recoat" them.

Josh, changed my interior from Tan to Black and charcoal this summer. Changed every piece. Looks awesome. Cost about $400.00 and 5 hours of time. Well worth it. Go for it.

upper door panels, yes, they're plastic and that dye works great on them. The seats may wear too quickly and you'd be back to square one, but you can try it and see.
