Locked myself out of my car...

Hello 3rd gen forums! I have a problem!

Yesterday I bought a third gen camaro (an 89) as a project for 600 dollars.

Today I was messing around with it and the short and sweet is that i've locked myself out.

I have an ignition key but it's not working on the doors. I've jiggled it around and it actually turned a little, but that's as far as I've gotten.

How do I get this thing open? Also, where can i find scematics for the doors? if I decide to fiddle around under the door panel with a ruler I want to have some idea of what I'm doing

Re: Locked myself out of my car...

I think we have two keys for our third gens, ignition key and doors (sq ignition, oval doors). At least for me, also what might help on usually old worn key cyclinders is to use a flat head screw driver as a key to turn it. If that don't work, guess just try to reach the rod where it controls door to unlock (going forward towards the nose)?

Re: Locked myself out of my car...

Flex the window out and hold with wood wedge. Use a long rod to push the unlock button, the manual unlock slider, or the hatch release.

Yeah, i'm missing the old oval shaped entry key, and the seller hasn't returned my calls so I don't know if one actually exists.

Do you think the chevy dealer down the road could make a key based on just the VIN?

also, if anyone knows exactly how to get into an 89 without a key and without smashing a window i'd be thankful for the advice.

That sounds really risky, I'd prefer to try something else.

I've been able to find a pretty huge gap between the window pane and the top of the door, just above the lock. Is there any way I could stick something down there and unlock it from there? I've stuck a ruler and a coat hangar down there so far but I really don't have any idea what i'm contacting with them.

If it has the switch on the console, a rod between the window/weatherstrip long enough to reach & pop the hatch.

This is why i keep a spare door key in my wallet.
If the owner doesnt return your call i would change the locks too.

Re: Locked myself out of my car...

all i can say is slim jims work wonders on these cars, and can be made for a couple cents

you don't have to wedge the window open or anything just slide it between the glass and door

Re: Locked myself out of my car...

My little brother did this at Walmart with his 90 Camaro one time. We went in and bought a thin metal yardstick and just slid it down between the window and the outside of the door slim jimmed it.

Re: Locked myself out of my car...

I did this in high school with an 83 Berlinetta. I was able to bend the window back without breaking it and getting may arm and hand down to unlock it. Desperate times called for desperate measures as I was unable to call my parents for the spare key.....there was a bag of something on the center console I couldn't let anyone see!

Re: Locked myself out of my car...

Just look at the gap at the bottom rear of the drivers door window where it meets the top of the door. You should be able to just look down inside and see the look assembly and the lock rods.

Just bend up a coat hanger and pull the locking rod and unlock the door.
