Cruise/Wiper/Turn Signal shaft replacement

The paint labeling on this "shaft" is worn away and I am looking into replacing it. How much would one cost, and how easy is it to replace it?

Hey Tyler, he is not talking about the steering column, but the turn signal switch.

Sorry, I do not know how to do it, but want to do it too.

sorry to say...but that little stick has to have the whole steering column taken appart...when i bought my car the guy who had it before me snapped it off...so i made them replace it...i watched the dealership do it...i suggest you take it to a chevy dealer..its safer..plus if they get it wrong you can take it back and complain

You will have to get the shaft itself from a dealer, or maybe somewhere like classic industries. It's not much harder to replace the blinker shaft than it is to replace the key lock cylinder for the ignition. Look around the board and you should be able to find info from someone who has done it already. If you can find an exploded view of the steering column it will help also. Sometimes you can get one printed up for you at a dealer.

I snapped mine off...
i can't use my wiper blades, so far it's not a problem but it will start raining pretty soon around here...
i was hopeing i could do it myself but i'm not so sure if i trust myself to take apart the whole damn column, especcially with an airbag...
but would it be a challenge for me to do it myself or just impossible.
and how much would a place charge to replace it for me...

I believe that the lever just pulls out. You'll have to disconect the cruise cable, and pull it through, along with a piece of wire or string so that you can put it back. It sounds to me like everybody who had to take their column apart had to do so because the piece that had broken off was too far in to get out easily. The only other thing is I think in the NextGeneration magazine they have these things for like $50.

BlueAlice91bird is correct. If yours is broken off to where you can't get ahold of it with some type of pliers, you might drill and tap a hole into it, then put a screw in it to pull on.

Since his is not broken, the column does not need to be taken apart. It simply yanks right out.

So it just pulls right out? I'll have to try that. Thanks, all.

figure about $120 from a dealer or around $80 from a non-dealer place that carries GM parts.

I just tried to pull the lever out, but it won't budge. Is there a screw or something inside the column that needs to be removed first?

There should be a screw holding the actual shaft on the steering column, but you will have to pull the wheel and the spring tensioner to get to it. Once you remove the screw it should pull right out.

Well, both in my 91 bird, and 89 camaro, I just tugged on them and they pulled out. It'll be a little stiff. Of course I wouldn't want to misinform you and have you break it, better to err on the side of caution, but the Chilton's manual says just pull too, so.....you decide.

I got mine with cruise for $80 from www.gmpartsdirect.com

I gave it a yank straight out and it popped out of the socket. Since i had cruise, i did have to take the column apart so i could feed the cruise wire to the plug at the base of the column.

Year One sells them for around $50. Don't have my catalogue in front of me but I am planning on changing mine in the near future as it came bent when I bought the car.
