Power Bulge Hood

Does anyone know if the Firebird hood with the driver's side bulge changed from 84 to 90?

as far as i know it's the same hood it just sat in storage a couple of years at GM until they started using it on the 87-92Formula's.

Except on the formula it didn't have the cowl induction set up to feed the cold air into the motor.

its rumored that the original hoods were aluminum. dunno if that is true or not but the '92 Firehawk did have an aluminum power bulge hood.

The later Formula hoods have a cover for the cowl that is removeable with 4 bolts.. the earlier ones were open stock..

Actually I've heard of some 87 Formulas with LG4s that had functional cowl induction. Yeah, definetly no aluminum here. It's about 400 friggin pounds.

How much should I expect to pay for one of these steel hoods from a junk yard?

Could I open the back of the power bulge hood on my 91 formula? What about water, stuff getting in? How was this problem addressed on the open power bulge hoods. Was the air cleaner right where the opening was. Can't really do that with tpi...

Good luck finding one...they are hard to find. I have a functional one on my '83. No way is it aluminum...it is pretty damn heavy. I love it since nobody around here has one. My neighbor has the aftermarket one on thier '83 firebird...it is the one where the scoop is centered in the middle. I never see the hoods around...so I couldnt tell you how much they went for...but they look great on '87-'90 Trans ams.

The size of the pop up headlights was reduced for the 91-92 models, so earlier hoods won't fit quite right.

Taking the plate off the reverse teardrop bulge doesn't do much more than let heat out of the engine, but the water doesn't hurt anything.

My '82 did not have the fresh air system and had a plate to cover the opening.

They are all the same hood. The headlight covers and bezels changed, not the hood.

My '82 sales broshure says aluminum, but i guess they had trouble with them and they all ended up being steel.

The rarest factory hood is the S/E hood with the vents in the front like a '89 T/A but no vents in the back.

The headlight covers got so much smaller in 91, how could a pre-91 model hood fit right?

I doubt if it helps but I just saw two 84's two days ago at the junk yard. They were both in perfect shape. Even had the air cleaners sitting in the car.

The steel T/A hoods from 82-84 & formula hood from 87-92 all have the same part number.
I bought one in a junk yard for $125, I could sell it to you if you really want it. its off an 83 T/A that did not have the ram-air option.
