How do use a slim jim on a 3rd gen.

I dont ever plan on locking my keys in my car again but I was outside till 5 in the morning one morning tring to get in my car. Well if it happens again does anybody know where to find the rod that you pull up to unlock the door?

I figured its easier to ask then to pull my door pannel off and find it. Which isnt a bad idea.

Since you dont live near me I'll tell ya.

There is a rod that actually runs down from the lock cylander to the lock mechanism.

No offence to you but I have said this so many times before to people who do that. Thats the most stupid creation ever made. Those little magnetic key holders that you stick under your car, man. You know what car hoppering is? Thats someone with nothing better to do then to go down the alley and look for unlocked car doors and those little boxs with you key in it.

I have to ask you one question though do you have one??¿¿

Some "offence" taken; that little magnetic key box was probably created by some moron that locked their keys in their car. Ahem.

If all you do is keep your DOOR key in it, then what's the big deal? So, they can get inside if they find it - what's your point? If you lock your IGNITION keys inside the car then you use your hidden DOOR key to get inside and get your frigging keys. Oh, I get it you want to hide a slim jim on your car somewhere. Gotcha. Or maybe you want to carry a slim jim with you where ever you go, that'd make a nice conversation starter. "Is that a slim jim in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?" Gimme a break.

"Car hoppering?" So, you're saying you leave your doors unlocked? If yes, you don't need to know how to work a slim jim; use the handle it's unlocked. If no, then what the flaming monkey was your point? So the bad guy finds your car unlocked. Great. Then, what, he finds your magnetic box with your door key in it? Swell. Then what? If "car hoppering" is so prevalent in your neighborhood, then no matter what you do the bad guys will get in your car. You may not know how to slim jim your ride - but I'm sure they do.

Here's an idea. Learn how to pop your hood from underneath the front of the vehicle. Then keep a spare in your engine compartment somewhere. Underneath your washer fluid bottle or something. Or is that too difficult too?

Do I have one? No. Let's see if you can tell why I don't.

I'm curious; to all of the losers you've told this to (whom I presume use the magnetic boxes) how many have had their cars "hoppered?" I dare say none.

That would truly suck but in all fairness, I didn't say to use a magnetic box - he just a$$umed that's what I meant. Like I pointed out later, you can always unlatch your hood from underneath the front of the car, then recover your key from under the hood somewheres.

Well said AGAIN Steve

Just get a backup key made and put it in your wallet. OR be a little more careful and don't lock your keys in your car.

I have three copies of my keys. One for me, one for my wife, and one that stays at Mom's house. That way, if I ever lock my keys in my car, I just call one of them.

You could always just chain your keys to yourself. That way you can't get up without taking them with you.

You know what would be funny¿ Take this situation. You just spend two grand on a good sound system. You put one of these keys in your car (somewhere that you think no one will find). Let’s say the key vibrates loose and hits the ground right where you parked. Some one comes along picks it up tries it on you car and gets in. So what he got in you car right? There goes you system speakers amp and say he cut a big hole in you seat for fun. Hey look on the bright side they did steal you car.

>ps that was my typo that "car hopper" with out the "ed"

>oh yeah and to carry a slim jim around¿ Good idea but I was thinking more along the lines of getting one at a auto parts store , 99 cents store or what ever freinds house.

>here is a better Idea leave a copy at home, I can always kick in my house door but I'll leave my car alone.

>I herd you can pull the window out and put you arm in there. Thats kinda ... I dont know something I want to see before doing it my car. Hey I can do that to a junk yard car and find out yeah or if you want to post a pic of you doing that, that would be great.

Know what'd be even funnier? You spend three, no FIVE thousand dollars on a kick @$$ system, nice new interior, new leather seats, tinted windows...

Some @$$monkey hears you playing your system nice and loud while you drive around 'pimpin'. He follows you to your place and just drives on by noting where you live. Later he comes back with a buddy or two, smashes your window in, grabs all your stuff and trashes your interior "just for fun."

No matter what you do, if someone wants your stuff bad enough they're going to get it.

Sorry, I was trying to help you with your subject of locking your keys in your car. If I had known you were going to head off into the la-la land of "what if's" I never would have replied.

Pull off your door panel and see how to slim jim your car door. That'll stop someone from getting your stuff AND have the added benefit of allowing you to get in when you lock your keys in the car again. Don't carry a spare. Don't get the credit card key. Don't hide a key anywhere near or on your car. Don't give a set of keys to a couple of your friends or parents so you can call them if you need to. Don't use a heavy duty zip tie to hide a key under your hood, because they vibrate free way way too easy. Don't sign up with AAA because as part of their membership they will open your locked car for you. And for heaven's sake, please, please don't think outside the box. Go here and sign up for their next course, I believe it's free... www.howtoslimjimacardoorbecauseyoulockedyourkeysinlikeadumb@$$.com/dammitIdidi tagain.html

Good luck, I hear the graduation exam is an allnighter car hoppering! ,
S.

P.S. Don't look now but I think the typo gnomes snuck into your post again.

EDIT: DAMMIT! They snuck into mine too!

I figured its easier to ask then to pull my door pannel off and find it. Which isnt a bad idea.

Back to the top, I just needed to know where that rod is that you pull with a slim jim. Good idea I'll put a spare key in my wallet. Well Who knows why I put this post here maybe I am getting a $500.00 lock pic set and slim jim set for Christmas and I'm doing research on how to break into cars. Who knows? I just want to know"."

I know this doesn't relate to the point of the original question, but I used a magnetic box on my 84 Camaro for years. Nobody ever found it (there are some good hiding places), and I hit a minivan at 45 mph and it didn't fall off. Of course, after that, I couldn't get to it until I cut the front frame off, but that's beside the point.

As far as the slimjim, I it doesn't seem too hard to do. Especially if you have looked inside the door before. I only know that I remember this, I can't remember the details.

Just a guess, but I'd say it's somewhere between the latch and the slider.

If you have to ask you won't be able to do it yourself. There are so many easy ways to get into thirdgens, and even more easier ways to steal a thirdgen if you don't mind hurting it. The only method of getting into a thirdgen that doesn't have potential of damaging the car is to use a key. Pulling the window out will bend the window regulator. A slimjim will cut the weatherstripping not to mention the possibility of damaging hardware or wiring inside the door. The example goes on and on... its pretty simple, don't lock your keys in the car again. Usually once you do it once you won't do it again.

I think I going with you idea. Chances are you can lock you keys in you car for some odd reason but locking you wallet and you keys. That’s less likely, or some one has some real issues.

>good idea

Well, this has been a real informative post ,although it has been humerous. I think the moral of this story is, Don't lock your keys in your car.
