speedo needle change over the years?

i recently bought a 145mph gauge cluster. i made my own white face gauges, which i'll post pics of once it's in the car. i also pulled off the needles and painted them. the problem is, when i got the cluster, the circular piece of the speedo needle was cracked. i figured i would just swap it with the needle on my 85mph cluster. i pulled the needle off the old cluster, cleaned it, and painted it. when i was putting the needles back on my new cluster, i couldn't get the speedo needle back on. upon closer inspection, the peg is longer and the hole seems to be a little smaller. i went to the junkyard and pulled a needle out of an 86 z28 with an 85mph speedo, but had the same problem. did they change the needle sometime between 85-89, or were the needles from 145mph different than needles from 85mph gauges?

i just snapped a quick picture of the pegs on the back that hooks up to the pin in the gauge. the one from the 85mph speedo (left) is about 7/32" and the one from the 145mph speedo (right) is about 1/8"

I never noticed that before, but it would appear that your picture answers your own question. I wonder if carefully drilling the hole a tad bigger would be good enough or if you'd need the longer shaft.

my question wasn't if the pegs were different, i can obviously see that they're different. my question is, when i look for a new needle, do i need to get one from a later year, or one from a 145mph speedo.
