T-top compatability/availability
Hey guys, I recently bought a 91 camaro rs. It has the plastic (lexan?) tops. I lost one on the highway towing it back home.
Anyway, I need to replace it, and I want glass anyway.
Before anyone tells me to search, I did. For a solid hour. All I get was mixed answers, and nothing definite.
What I learned so far (and correct me if I am wrong) is that from 82-84, they were glass, with a hook style latch on them. 85-88 had glass also, but a pin style. Just a metal pin. Finally 89-92 had glass or lexan with a metal pin, but had a spring loaded plastic sleeve over the pin.
is that correct?
What I want to know FOR SURE is whether or not 91-92 camaros ever came factory with glass tops. Or were they strictly lexan. And were there ever glass tops with the extra spring loaded sleeve on the pins?
That's what I can't find a definite answer on. From what I've gathered, any glass top from 85 up had just the small metal pin. The only time it had the larger sleeved pin was if they were lexan.
And as far as calling them lexan, I know that's not 100% correct, but that's what everyone has called them.
I just want to finally have a solid accurate list of compatability, and availability or t-tops.
Thanks everyone!

Re: T-top compatability/availability
The hook style tops were 82,... possibly 83.
84 used the metal pin style and T-Tops were non-locking with a plastic edge around the glass. Sometime In 85 or 86 they lost the plastic around the glass and Locks were added.
Yes,... I've had Glass tops with the large plastic sleeve.
The same kind of T-roof body brackets were used for cars with big or small pins. (some are a little different then others, but not in regards to how the T-Top is secured ) There WAS a change to the body and T-Top weather-stripping when comparing Glass to Lexmar T-Tops, However;.... any 84+ top will fit any 84+ F-Body. The body-to-top seal has more of an "angled" seam on the earlier tops and more "squared" seam on the later ones.
I thought the 90-92 were teh ones that got the "lexmar" (?) or plastic T-Tops,... and only Lexmar; but I'm not sure.
I've got several sets of 84-89(?) small pin Glass tops. I also live in RI so If your interested in replacing your plastic ones you could trial fit a glass pair before buying them.

Re: T-top compatability/availability
I have personally seen 2 sets of tops from 90-92 cars with the large pins and glass tops. I bought one set at one junkyard (don't ask) and got the set from the other out of my way as I was working on the 91 at the other yard.

My 92 bird came with Lexan T-tops from factory, but according with the vin/rpo codes, it was supposed to come with glass tops.
All mixed up at factory? dealer swap? who knows...

Re: T-top compatability/availability
While moving some stuff today I noticed that 1 set of glass tops I've got has the plastic around the glass edges AND Locks. Now I remember that both of those 'options' were used at the same time on some T-Tops.

So, if I put glass t-tops on my 91, would it still be somewhat correct? As far as availability.

Also, has anybody seen an rpo for the lexmar tops? My rpo sheet has code CC1 (I believe) for glass tops. I wonder if it really means glass, or they just use that code in general.

Re: T-top compatability/availability
Front what I've learned here, 91-92 all got lexan from the factory but many were replaced under warranty with glass. Seems that a lot of people did the same on their own later.
I have also seen the glass tops with the frame on 85 and 86 cars, but I don't think they were original. My 85 came to me with one bordered glass top and one unburdened. Both had metal pins and both fit in the center divider, but the bordered one didn't sit well on the rubber seals.

Re: T-top compatability/availability
I just got a set for free. One has the plastic around it. Can it be removed?
EDIT: Never mind, it DID have it but it was taken off. So that answers it.

I want to say they are glued on. I'm not entirely sure as the stuff I scraped off could have just been from dirt.

Re: T-top compatability/availability
My 83 Z has the early style t tops with the plastic around the glass. The problem I am running into is that there are no moulding pieces to be found, so I am fixing the ones I have using bondo, JB weld, and LOTS of time!!! I also can't find the plastic piece that goes around the glass!! Good luck with your tops!!

Pretty sure that are just 'stuck' on around the edges of the glass using a soft eurethane.
