Car going to the body shop Monday

I'm dropping my 89 IROC-Z off for paint and to repair the damage my wife did from backing into the drivers side fender and door. My question is.... I haven't purchased my new stripes or IROC-Z decals for the doors. So would it be better to wait a while to let the paint cure good... I'm assuming they will bake the car anyway, but would it matter when I had the stripes installed? I was going to do that after I get the car back... to make sure everything looks right. Then take it back and have the door decals installed.

They are installing my new door and t-top weatherstripping after its painted, along with new door pins and bushings. Excited to get it done...

I would wait. I had new paint on mine and installed the IROC-Z Door decal much later.
My painter used products with solvents not this water base stuff I have seen.
He also suggested the 90 days for decals.
Only a mild soap with nothing else added (no wax) and water to wash the car for just as long.
If you apply wax and other products to the paint before it cures you will smother the drying paint and locking in the ability for solvents in the paint to dissipate.
This says basically the same thing but thought I would add it.

Just curious what just the paint job is costing you. And where you are getting it done at.

2A Auto Body in Fort Oglethorpe, GA is doing the work... it's costing me 2400.00 to replace the drivers side fender, remove ground effects, front and rear bumpers, stripes, weatherstripping and trim... strip the car, fix any imperfections in the body and paint it base / clear then re-assemble. They are putting the car on jack stands in the paint booth also, so the rockers get a good coat of paint. This includes the door jambs.... and I'm a repeat customer so the owner cut me a large discount.

Amazing shop though, so if any of you are near north Georgia then 2A is the place to go. I'll have pics in a couple weeks

Ron,

Thanks for the information. I was thinking it would be better to wait until the paint fully cures before adding stripes and decals. It will be stored in my heated garage until the weather warms up too

Re: Car going to the body shop Monday

I hope you’re going to document the process with photos.
I did a" prep. to paint" thread showing some of the work being done.
They came out great and since it was a high end paint job like yours ( around here I consider that a high end )there are plenty of steps in the process to take them.
That's a nice price considering what you’re getting. From what your describing if there using a quality paint and clear it would run in the $5,000.00 range around here.
Congratulations on the paint job.

Re: Car going to the body shop Monday

I agree when I work in shops we did it to but if you can wait to install the decals and not take a chance of traping solvents why not wait ?

Its always better to wait if you can, though most collision shops will put on decals after its baked and polished.
