pics of my car in body shop
As I posted earlier I sent my car to a local body shop to get it repainted Dark Red Metallic. So far they have impressed me with the amount of work they have put into the car. I'll update this thread with new pics as the car gets completed. Today they taped it off for the first stage of primer, all weatherstripping and excess parts removed.... such as trim, ground effects, etc...
So enjoy!
So enjoy!

Its really nice when I see another Third gen. getting painted in this fashion but why is the decal still running along the bottom of the car ?

They removed the pin striping, I took this pic when they started smoothing the body out. All weatherstripping was removed as well as the t-top bar.... including the front windshield. I'll try to stop by and take some more this week. It's currently in primer and they will be block sanding the body tomorrow. Hopefully it will be in the paint booth this week..... I'm anxious to see the finished product! Lol

Thanks Ron, yeah there aren't many nice third gens around my area. Thankfully I have the means the get my dream car finished. Can't wait to show it off at all the local car shows!
And I haven't seen another dark red metallic IROC-Z around here.... honestly I've never seen another one in person ever, other than on this forum. So it's nice to own something a little different.

Re: pics of my car in body shop
I also had my car painted in a shop buy a good friend.( pro. painter) I was given a really good price for a "top of the line" B/C.
Do you mind telling me how much you're paying and some details on the brand of paint/etc.
You can't show me something as nice as this without me asking.
I cant wait to see more photos.
Side note = It seems to me they are moving at a good pace. Some shops put full paint jobs second to their "insurance" repair work that is usually where they make their money. Takes them forever to get the full prep and paint done.

He cut me a huge discount, and honestly it floors me thinking about it... $2100.00 to strip and paint the whole car, base & clear then re-assemble it. With the price of the fender its going to total around 2500.00, the weatherstripping was a little extra work too. I'm not sure what brand of paint he uses, the owner also owns Keystone automotive paint and body shop supplies, which supplies local shops with their paint products. I'll ask him tomorrow when I stop by, that is a good question.
Btw, MAACO quoted me 3300.00 to replace the drivers side fender and repaint the whole car. And the thing I didn't like about them was they were going to tape the car off then shoot it... and not remove any body parts such as the ground effects.
When I stopped by to take those pictures he had three techs working on my car with cars lined up outside waiting to get repaired. I told him to take his time but it seems he wants the big projects out of the way, they have been hammering away at my car.
This is the 2nd week my car has been in the body shop. It's finally in the first stage of primer and will be block sanded tomorrow. I'm not sure when they will start spraying it, hopefully by the end of the week. And then it has to cure... and that pain in the rear process of putting the car back together. So I'm thinking at least another week and a half before its finished. I don't see how he's making any money on this project...

Yeah I really like this color, especially at night when the metallic makes it look different shades of red. I also like the red and black pin stripes GM put on with Dark Red Metallic.

Re: pics of my car in body shop
Mines decal delete .. And I'll just leave it that way as that's how it was ordered. I would kinda like the decals though, as you see so few of these cars today. Back when it was ordered they were all over, so it was different to not have them.
You'll have a nice cleanup job to do when it's finished....

With a decal delete car, do they just have the rocker emblems and nothing else? I don't blame you for keeping it factory.
I didn't like the door decal on my bright red IROC-Z, so I removed them. But on this dark red metallic, it looks really good with them. So once the paint cures I will be installing new door decals and stripes to keep it original. Honestly I love everything about the exterior of an IROC.... including the wheels. I wish they made 17x9 polished IROC replicas.... if so I'd buy them in a heartbeat. As an upgrade from the 16's. Oh well... can't have it all I suppose. Lol

No decals are present. I love the 89 I bought.... The more I drive it the more I like it. While not fast by today's standards it's still a cool vintage hot rod / sports car.
Edit: and yes all them emblems are present.... Iroc Z ... etc

I hope this shell I picked up a few weeks ago is clean as Im looking to start over with it. Looking for a complete repaint from and im gonna redo all the seals and all the seam sealer as well. They will get the car as a roller and completely stripped of everything except the steering components. I want the inside and out done then line-x the floors top and bottom and have a solid project to go with.
Good job on the paint and keepin a eye on it. I know alot of shops if they know the owner doesnt care they will cut corners

Sounds like you have quite the project! But that's the right way to do one... Luckily this car was in great shape, the undercoating is still in tact and looks new. So I didn't have to do as much work on it... post some pics as you get it done, I'd like to see the progress! Thanks...

Re: pics of my car in body shop
My car is mint as its from texas but it just falls under emissions so I have to either look for a new shell, Swap AHEM certain numbers lol or a deal with it. I want to turbo my LS next year and I never see it passing ever again after that let alone this year. So I might as well start with a body and a colour I like as Ive owned too many red 3rd gens. Time for a colour I want but just not sure what yet

Re: pics of my car in body shop
Looks great coming along nicely, I bet it will look awesome in Mettalic Red. My 88' GTA is being put back together as we speak, I kept it the white. It was wrecked in September, totaled by my insurance I bought it back and hit the junk yards, found a replacement right door, bought an old rear quater panel and was just going to replace the head liner, well it came out of paint and looked so good, it will soon have new carpet through out, and front seats reupolstered. New front seat belts. If I could find a new Center console it would be awesome. Back seats I dont think were ever sat in. Certainly a labor of love. Hope yours turns out great.

It would be cool if you could watch it being sprayed.... I had a KW truck sprayed once and could just peek through a window in the door of the booth.... but was able to go in after.
It's cool getting a paint job.... it shoud look great !!

I wish I could watch them spray it.... thankfully they don't mind me or my wife stopping by to take pictures as its being completed. Amazes me at how much work is involved in doing a paint job the right way...
When they shoot the base coat, do they do the clear right after or do they let the base coat dry first? My wife said the painter mentioned this was the first coat, so that sounds like he is going to apply another tomorrow.

Yeah I noticed that.... I hope it doesn't have too much of an orange look. Before it was actually red, dark red... which I like. Maybe it's just the picture and not like that in person.
I wonder what causes that? The paint mixture not being spot on? Hopefully it matches the factory color as I'm not a fan of an orange red.... guess I'll know more when I pick the car up. Hopefully it's just the camera and the sun giving that shade of red.

Here it looks darker... maybe it was the sun. Wish I didn't have to work all day so I could see it in person.

It is a beautiful color... this is the first IROC I've ever seen in Dark Red Metallic. I honestly thought the car was painted at some point, nope, it was factory. The metallic in the paint makes it pop at night under street lights... plus it seems to be a color that not many have, which is a plus.
My wife calls it maroon, which drives me crazy. lol... but I guess it is close to being a maroon color. I like it though...

In the pic of the side that looks more orange you can see the Suns reflected in the paint..... in late afternoon light it will have some orange to it. I think it's more from the Sun than the actually color, and the metallic reflects it.
It's a good color ... you'll like it. It looks good with the black accents / your T tops, louvers, etc.

Re: pics of my car in body shop
I talked to the body shop yesterday... they are trying to get the car finished today. The owner told me he was sending it to a glass shop to get the weatherstripping installed, evidently they don't do weatherstripping at his shop. So it'll take around three hours to get it all installed.
So far they have the hatch back on, spoiler, rear bumper, tail lights, door locks, door handles and mirrors. They still have to install the body molding, header panel, front bumper, hood and ground effects. Which shouldn't take too long to do... I stopped by at 5:30 this morning and looked at the car through the window... WOW! That clear is deep... can't wait to see it in the sunlight when its all together. If you have the means to get your car painted, and it needs it... then get it done. This is the most rewarding thing you can do other than building a bad *** motor for your car.
Pics should be posted this evening... if I get it back today

" If you have the means to get your car painted, and it needs it... then get it done. This is the most rewarding thing you can do other than building a bad *** motor for your car. "
That's been my experience too..... I've dumped tons of money in different cars / trucks in motor parts etc ..... and the biggest bang for the $ has always been a paint job.

Well it seems they have a good amount of work to do still. So it's going to be the middle of next week before I get the car back. The paint looks amazing though... so I'm happy with it.
Anyway here are two pics I snapped of it after work...

Are they going to paint the engine bay or no? Are they painting the underside of the hood?

Not painting the engine bay... Mine is really clean and looks great so there was no need to. And I'm not sure if they painted the bottom of the hood or not, I haven't seen it yet. If not then I'm ok with it because I'm going to install a new insulation piece under the hood anyway
They painted the bottom of the rear hatch though... so it's possible they could have painted the back side of the hood. I'll know for sure on Tuesday.

Well its almost done... they got it back from the glass shop this morning. So the weatherstripping is new, which kinda irritated me as this new weatherstripping seems to be in worse shape than the originals were. There are spots that look dried out... I'll post pics of it Friday when I pick the car up. The car is flawless though.... looks beautiful.
I left the body molding off, which I debated off and on for the past couple days. Main reason is the drivers side front piece was damaged beyond repair, and locating those pieces is a pain... but... the doors are perfectly straight so I don't mind.
They painted the headlight area black today and have to clean the interior tomorrow. I'll take a ton of pics this weekend of the whole car...

The 1989 dark red has a totally different look to it and doesn't have the orange look like the '87s do. Here's a pic of my car and my neighbor's '89. You can see the difference in color, but both are dark red metallic.

Wow! quite a difference.... I had no idea they were different.
Thank's for the info and pic's Scott.
Question... What year did they change the body side molding ? must have been 88 or 9 ?

scottmoyer,
Thanks for posting those pics. There is a difference between the two... that's interesting. Mine seems to be closer to your 87 as far as the shade of red, but then again in the sunlight it looks like that 89. Either way its a beautiful color. Not something you see on these cars very often
