85 Trans Am spoiler.

Hello all!
I have an 85 Trans am, and it has one of those rubber rear spoilers....and I've finally come to it. Its in pretty rough shape. Paint is all gone and the fins that extend towards the rear window are a bit misformed....is there anything to do to fabricate these old spoilers?? I'm used to the deck style ones, not these rubber ones.

Re: 85 Trans Am spoiler.

These rubber spoilers are garbage once they are too far gone. Back in the day I had one repainted and it looked good for a few months. It eventually cracked all over. Hawks sells a fiberglass reproduction that I hear is pretty good. Their spoiler cost a little coin but I believe fiberglass repop is the way to go.

Re: 85 Trans Am spoiler.

The last time I checked, they don't have the clip provisions to attach it to the window frame.

That's the thing. My rear hatch has those dumb studs poking out for then spoiler. Soooo what do I do with those? If the fiberglass one doesn't use them?

Re: 85 Trans Am spoiler.

The new fiberglass wraparounds uses different hardware to attach it to the hatch and the FG wing has indents where those clips would go to cover them.

Re: 85 Trans Am spoiler.

To attach the fiberglass ones I actually used screws with a head that slides under the clips on the hatch, lined everything up, screw into where it would attach and fit like a charm

Why didn't you use the hardware it came with?I would be afraid the FG would crack using anything other than what it came with.

I did this same thing on mine and it works great. I wasn't about to use the clips they give you that mounts on the tip of the spears. we used all 6 pockets and the deck bolts, that thing aint movin!

Re: 85 Trans Am spoiler.

I find those clips to be shoddy and cheesy. You won't crack that fiberglass as it is like a resing and screws into the pockets very nicely. I feel like with the screws you have a lot more control over the fitment of the spoiler. for example if there's a gap under the wing all you have to do is tighten the screw a little more into the spoiler and make it hug the hatch tighter.

I was considering making a mold from my horrible wing... Then spending hours getting that mold straight and then making another wing, and likely wasting money on materials and time until I got fed up and bought a new wing...
My suggestion is to buy the Hawks spoiler.
Up here in Canada we can't get them, but I luckily found a supplier by calling and harassing people lol.
