I have lost the transmission key to my 91 Trans Am GTA. I have the door key. My questions is: if I would find out the right vat key code and order a blank key, would I be able to then use the door key to cut the ignition key - would that work? Basically I need to know if the door key is basically the ignition key without a chip in it. I hope I explained that well! I've been doing online searches, but haven't found a for sure answer.

 

A good GM dealer will get you a key, if you have ID and proof you own the car.

Worst case, a lock smith or buy a new key and lock cyl combo.

 

That's what I would do. Ignition Key and door key are completely different.

 

I am going to call a dealership tomorrow. I was just wondering because I can order a key that is not cut, but has the right chip/code. I just didn't know if I could use that option if I didn't already have an ignition key to cut from.

 

that may cost some big $$$

for less than $100 you get a new ignition lock cylinder with a "template" key and a "chip" key ready to use... all you need is your VATS code.
