I just bought an 88 Iroc with new paint and only 49,000 orig miles from Indiana, been wanting one ever since high school (didn't you?) so..

No stranger to cars, had and built many, but this is kinda baffling me.

I bought the car on a cloudy day. What I don't understand is that I took a pic of the car today to send to friends....sunny outside...and I can't see the red Iroc decal in the pic. Looking at other dark red cars on the net you can see the decals...

So I start looking at the car and notice the red Iroc decal blends in damn near perfect to the color of the paint.. is this right? Cars on the net must use a flash..so I used a flash in the garage and boom, the Iroc graphic shows.
Am I alone? this normal?? You guys with the dark red cars -is this kinda like a stealth thing?

 

here she is in the garage...when you use the flash the color seems to "pop" a bit more..

 

Well it has of course been repainted, perhaps it's not quite the color it should be. Or the decal could be a shade or two off itself.

You can tell they did a great job matching the paint on this baby, all the jams look great etc..etc..

So what do you think Mr. GTA? maybe some bad aftermarket decals?

Check the rpo codes and check, there should be a decode information somewhere here on tgo. I don't see many maroon irocs, and she's a beauty!

 

R code says "Dark red Met". I cross ref with this site and others. I have the orig invoice too and it says same, it is however missing the build data from the radiator cross support. Has all r codes in console though...

I'm starting to think after looking at phoenix graphics that maybe they used 85-87 graphics instead of the 88 and up color/style??
-heck, I dunno, love the car anyway. I just came from a 04 redfire mustang so maybe I'm projecting a bit of that cars look of metallic onto this baby LOL!!

 

Somewhere around 86 or 87 GM no longer put the metal data tags on the radiator support over the fan shroud area. Instead, they used a longer but narrower metal tag with, I think, 6 numbers on it. It was also located on the radiator support, but in one of two places: 1) over the fan shroud area like in earlier years; but most-likely yours is in the later location 2) near the passenger side headlight. The numbers on the tag merely reference numbers on the build sheet, so the build sheet is identifiable to the specific car. No other info about the car is referenced on the tag.

For the decal color though, I'm not sure if there's an RPO on the SPID label that's specific to decal color. Stripe/decal colors were determined by the combination of exterior paint color and interior color. But somewhere there must've been a reference for which decal color went with each ext./int. combo, so perhaps it is on the SPID label. I'm sure someone else will know.

 

Ya it could be paint color. Believe it or not but I just had my IROC repainted 3 weeks ago. I spent over $300 USD for factory (or so they said.....ebay lol) decals. Bodyshop called me to come look after applied prior to clearcoat and I was surprised that even on a deeper black, you could barely see them so we agreed to leave them off. Pretty neat though as many people ask what the heck kind of car it is as only have bumper and rocker panel emblems identifying her.

this is exactly how my '88 looks. when i bought it (wow, 26 yrs ago), i did so because i liked the fact that the lettering didn't jump out and scream iroc as silver/gold letters do.

I had an 88 just like it in 89, sans ttops. I like the subtlety of the lettering. Still like to find that car someday. Looks really good RR.

Here's another '88. Correct decal color. But, given the trim I would have ordered black decals instead of bright red for a maroon car.
