Under the Evap Cannister on the left side of the car there is a triangular brace supporting the panel is sits on. As I have dismantled most of the front end, I am a little lost with the right side.

Is there not the same brace supporting the battery panel on the right side?

That's not the same part he posted. I know exactly what you are talking about. I know for a fact there is one on the driver side.

Just checked, I do not have one on passenger side. I believe that brace is to strengthen the mounting of the steering box.

Thanks Ted but WifesCar is referring to what I mean. So WifesCar does this part exist on the right hand side of the car under battery panel/shelf?

 

O I should asume the all Third Gens dont have this brace on the passenger side? I dont usually misplace parts or even bolts, so in all probability there wasnt one.
Would it be pushy to ask you for a picture of the under side of the passenger side for me.

My Camaro does not have the brace on the passenger side nor are there bolt holes for it either.

That is a battery tray support. It goes on whichever side the battery is on. Earlier cars had the battery on the pass side, tpi cars have it on the drivers, prob other engine variations.
If you have one on the side opposite the battery, it's because of an engine swap or wiring swap or someone thought it would be a good brace on the light side too.

 

It's a steering box brace. It goes on the driver side. I have never seen one on any car on the passenger side. My car had the original motor when I bought it and I know for a fact I never removed it when I put the new motor in. Every car I have ever seen it's on drivers side and its a pain cause it blocks one of the steering box bolts.

 

 

Doh! You guys are right! Sorry must have been thinking of sone other car. Went back and looked at my tear down pics and they are only on drivers side.
However, I think it was a piece of faulty engineering. It seems to me the only force this would brace against would be twisting of the frame rail, which seems to be very small consideration compared to the lateral force generated in the steering, which we know these didn't brace well enough against since they had to add the wonder bars.
If it does offer any significant bracing against the rail torquing, seems like it would be good to have one on pass side to.
I might add one to the pass side....

 

I don't believe there are any mount holes on the pass side, would be easy enought to fix. But I'm not sure it would make all that much difference.

Some engineer thought it was a good idea at the time.
