Base Firebird and Formula tail light wiring Vs Trans Am and GTA version

I know the tail light wiring on a base Firebird and a Trans Am and/or GTA is different. Im attempting a conversion on a base firebird and Ive heard people say that their Firebird all they had to do is pop the panel below the sail panel on the passenger side and plug in the trans am harness and it works. Ive also heard of people saying that they have the plug like on the trans am versions at the drivers side inside quarter back of the car on their Firebirds but mine is the solid harness with no plug. If I get a hold of either an 82-84 Trans am harness or an 85-90 trans am/GTA what is the easiest minimally invasive procedure to convert the firebird tail light harness to the trans am tail light harness. I guess the other thing would be are their Firebirds that GM decided to put a plug like the trans ams at random out there because Id like to see if it it happened. Thanks for any help on this. Any pictures, diagrams, or any drawings will be appreciated.

Anything?? Main thing I would like to see a picture of from somebody's original wiring is on the 85-90 Trans Am harness, is there a plug at the bottom of the drivers side sail panel area so that it can be unplugged and removed like on the firebird formula versions.

If you go on Austinthirdgen.org they have a tech article on converting the lights. I just happened to come across it when I went there for some wiring diagrams.

The plug/connector you're asking about isn't behind the sail panel; it's at the back of the car on the driver's side, in the vicinity of the rear storage compartment, near where the harness passes through the sheet metal to come inside the car from the taillights. But you don't have to touch it.

This thread will give you all the details for altering a base 'bird harness to make it work with TA tails, which is what I'm guessing you're wanting to do. It's all very simple.

I know its not right behind the sail panel, its in that area down at the bottom, when you pull the long panel with the sail panel and remove the plastic trim around the rear seat belt its at the bottom right beside the drivers door opening. I got a guy to pull a GTA harness at that plug so I can plug it into my firebird harness. Upon closer inspection, the harness that is currently in the car has been repaired or hacked up too many times and has wires exposed so it would need to be pulled to be fixed properly anyways.

It won't be as simple as swapping the harnesses, so if that's the route you want to take, then there will still be more to it. But swapping sockets, like in that thread, really will be the simplest way to go.

I didn't want to cut my original harness, so I got a harness from a JY car, and I cut/adjusted it; it was so simple. But if your existing harness is already hacked, then this would be the perfect time to go through it, adjust it to your liking, and fix it.

Then if you ever want to return to base 'bird tails, it will be just as simple to undo it, all while never having to work inside the car, no pulling of any panels, no disconnecting of any harnesses, no messing underneath the steering column, etc., none of that; all of the work is out back.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/auto-...ula-trans.html (Wiring for Firebird/Formula to Trans Am taillight conversion)

and it is an option, but I want get the T/A 82 brake/turn secuence.
