Custom headliner questions

I am thinking of getting rid of the boaring flat headliner. If I remove the current headliner in my hardtop, I am thinking of making a 3D design in it. I'm aiming for the Firebird logo. The hardest part will probly be cutting somehting out of cardboard that looks like the bird. Anyway, what will I need to do in order to do this? What is the best way to remove the headliner? What is the best adhesive, and what is the best technique to use so that the headliner will last as long as it can. I don't want to reglue this next year.

Thanks for the info.

I can't really tell you what would work, but I know 3M #77 spray glue doesn't work worth a damn. Its not heat resistent so it falls within a few days. Since you're working with a hard top headliner its not as flimsy as the ttop headliners but its still fragile. If its in good mint shape I would say just leave it be. However its your car and you can do whatever you choose with it. Just keep in mind its not cheap to replace if you screw it up.

Oh yeah, you'll also have to replace the clips that hold the headliner trim in place... they always break and new ones are only available from GM and cost between $1-2 each.

I just re-did my T-Top headliner and it came out pretty damn good. I'll take some pics tomorrow of it and post them.

I went to my local craft shop and found some spray glue that did the job just fine for me. It's been in the garage now for almost a week and no signs of it coming undone. We'll see what happens when the heat hits it....but I think it'll be OK.

If you do decide to take on this job...one thing I highly reccommend from my experience is to lay down a few coats of fiberglass resin while you have the material off. My headliner board was in OK shape....with a few cracks here and there. One of the rear pieces around the seatbelts snapped off...but the resin made it MUCH MUCH stronger than without it.

Use sheet foam, not cardboard for your screamin' chicken. You can either make it embossed or raised, depending on how you cut and place the foam.
