88 formula hood scoop leak

Good morning all! The hood scoop leaks bad on my 88 formula. It is an lo3 tbi engine. Wanted a new gasket, gm # 10030132. Of course there is none to be had. I can see water drip off one of the studs that retains it. Pretty sure it has to be the gasket. Please share any ideas you might have as what to use to seal it. Thinking silicone. Don’t want to get into urethane! Maybe i could make a new gasket but it seems a bit thicker and a felt type material. Weatherstripping? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Gary

Pretty sure the OE seal is just a closed cell foam rubber. Probably something in the window and door sealing aisle of your local hardware store that would get you close. Or hit your friendly neighborhood well equipped auto parts store and look at the weatherstrip they have available. Just avoid any open cell foam, you don't want anything that will absorb water pressed up against a body panel.

All of that said, the stock hood ornament (yeah I know, but that's what GM called it) doesn't really need to be 110% water tight. 4 out of 5 Formulas generally don't have the block off plate or drip trough installed at all.

If you gotta seal it, bath tub kitchen tile silicone or rtv is not the answer. You might consider a seam sealer, since thats what you're trying to do and it's for that kind of thing.

Thanks for the info. It’s not the “fake” inlet it is the whole scoop assembly that leaks. Maybe that is what u meant. Not sure! Anyway, it has to come off.....

Not a real photo, but an artist's rendition. #1 is the plastic gutter trough GM came up with to catch water running in the functional hood opening on cars with functional cowl induction. In real life it's just a corny little plastic catch tray that mounts to a couple of the hood screen tabs and keeps the water managed. It's fairly obscure, not even sure if the earliest CFI cars had it, or it was after the "Robo-Wash" incident. Really doesn't matter, everything under the hood is mostly weather resistant anyway.

You're saying #10 is leaking because seal #9 is kaput. #9 isn't anything special, just the same closed cell foam with a peel n stick backing as much of the other padding and seals on the car. The big thing is if you have nothing between #10 and the hood, it'll look goofy because #9 spaces the "Ornament" relative to the hood. Without it, you'll have the insert sitting below the level of the hood.

At any rate, it's not anything that has to be entirely application specific. Any closed cell foam that will fill the gap will keep the water out, and even then you could drive through a monsoon with the ornament removed completely and it wouldn't cause a real problem. Most Formulas haven't had the block off plate (#8) installed since the first person who could run a 7mm socket saw how it was mounted.
