Underbody Color

Anyone have any idea what the paint code or the name of the OEM underbody color is? Looking to do the underbody similar to the DSE Iroc. The exterior color will be black as is my rearend, suspension, and other parts. Want a contrast underneath with all the moving parts. Also will listen to reasonable opinions on underbody paint and pics if you have them. Final paint on my build coming soon.

Re: Underbody Color

The underbody was exposed gray electrostatic (e-coat) primer with overspray from the outer body paint.

If you want to replicate that, light gray epoxy primer looks very similar to the factory e-coat.

if you are not going for the factory look, many people paint the underside semi-gloss black.

Did you brush or spray it and if sprayed, did it smooth out or is it rough? Hard to tell in pic.

It's brushed. There are some rough spots but not bad for the underside. Key with por, use lots of brushes, as the paint builds up, it shows more strokes

Interesting, thanks for the detail on the e-coat. Do you know if the factory applied some sort of waxy rust proofing on hidden, inner panels? I'm noticed something inside my doors which is sort of clear, waxy that could be rust proofing. Seems like there is too much to be dried up grease.

Re: Underbody Color

I didn’t find any waxy inner coatings in my 1989 or my previous 1986 thirdgens. There were many dealer applied rustproofing products back then and many were a wax type. That would be my guess.

The undersides had no undercoating from the factory, but many were under coated at the dealer (especially northern cars).

The car came from a Houston area dealership. I would think the dealership applying some sort of rust protection would be slim to zero chances. I've read about rust protection that is described like this, just never have seen it before. Seems like it would also be something GM would not concern itself with - too expensive.

Re: Underbody Color

Most dealers in Houston sent cars to Ziebart for rustproofing. Nasty tar crap. Then GM had one called Rusty Jones rustproofing. More like what you described in previous posts.

Re: Underbody Color

Likely a wax based product is present. Both my 87 and 84 Camaros had it in the engine compartment, which rewuired mild solvents snd elbow grease to remove.
