When your Head Lights Quit working
When your Head Lights Quit working
I have a really fun 83 Z/28 305 5 speed. Great original condition with 100,000 miles on her. This means that while I was lucky to find this car because of the fact it has no rust, not even surface rust, mechanicals give out. Some major like Total front suspension rebuild or clutch and flywheel replacement and some like head lights quit. Of course at night no low beams no high beams nothing. I have driving lights so I was able to get home ok. Now I'm ol scool so back in the day when head lights quit it was usually the dimmer switch. That would be on floorboard on far left side, 2 screws and wala its off and put the new one on. The reason for this post is to tell everyone how to fix this problem on the 83 after reading some crazy posts else where. The dimmer is on the upper left side of the steering column near the bottom. Remove the lower drivers panel under dash, remove small panel directly under steering column, now you have access to the column bolts and nuts and dimmer switch. Remove the 2 nuts holding the steering column up and let it drop out of your way. Now Take the time to move things out of your way. You will save cussing and believe it or not time. A small rod is activated by pulling and pushing on the turn signal lever, that just sits in the dimmer switch. Unhook the wiring pigtail and remove the 2 screws holding the switch to the column. That's it. If your lucky you can adjust the switch up or down the column cause sometimes that's all that's needed. Otherwise replace with a good brand name switch and reverse how you took apart. My store had the cheappy switch but I had to order the good one so I just ran a small wire from the power wire in the pigtail to low beam wire and I had head lights till my switch came in. That's it , easy. In the ol days we used to be able to take a switch apart and clean terminals, regrease and good as new. Nowadays they make them disposable and hard to take apart. I have taken my head light switch apart, power window switches, rear hatch switch, and just clean , regrease and they are good as new.
