Rust

Hi, I have an 88 firebird GTA is in need of a paint job. My car is starting to get a lot of surface rust after leaving out of the garage for some time. I am wondering what is the best way to remove the surface rust and keep it from coming back until I can afford to get the paint done. I was thinking about a good wash and polish and then wax. Any thoughts would be apreciated. Thanks.

With chemicals. If your not going to be painting the car than just use chemicals to remove the rust. IMO: Sanding is too aggressive right now if it's not getting painted anytime soon. Unless you HAVE TO....... you don't really want to do any sanding until your actually ready for paint. Make sure anything you spray/coat over the clean metal says "sealer" on it somewhere. Don't coat it too thick, only enough to seal. The rust WILL appear again and you want to see it appear as soon as it returns so those areas can be treated/sealed again.

( & wash/polish/wax the painted surfaces ! )

Re: Rust

I would either completely remove it and seal it with epoxy or not touch it.
