Faded plastic trim

I have a 1992 RS 5.0 convertible; the red paint is all original and in pretty good shape. The problem I have is with the two (plastic, fiberglass?) pieces on top of the body that extend from the door openings to the rear spoiler. I don't even know what they are actually called but they are constantly exposed to the sun and are now starting to oxidize and fade. I tried using polishing compound on them but it didn't help much. I have read that the new ceramic coating products might work but I wanted to consult the experts to see if anyone can tell me what to use to clean up these pieces. Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks...

Post pics. Your clear coat is probably failing.

Re: Faded plastic trim

I don’t believe he’s talking about the quarter panel but rather the plastic trim that covers the half the wheel well and rear hatch area. Come to think of it I can’t think of what it’s called either 🤔

I’m sure as soon as someone posts it’s technical name I’ll be like ahhh yeah lol.

As far as your original question I’m of no help there, but also curious what others have done to restore these parts as well.

If the clear is starting to break down or peel all you can do is refinish them. However if they are just looking dull or chalky an actual buff with a wool pad and compund followed by a foam pad and polishing compound will restore the shine. If I had to guess you are dealing with the paint actually breaking down from UV exposure and it will need to be removed and repainted

He's talking about the spoiler extensions that run along the to top the qtr panel, up to the door jamb...sounds like....and sounds like its time for a repaint/clear coat. If it were me i would just rattle can them back to "new".

Re: Faded plastic trim

With such a small surface, rattle can in your paint color from a good supplier will work fine. Then clear on top, buff and you will be amazed at how well they will look. I have done several small areas like this(including my entire rear bumper) with very good results. I have used "automotivetouchup.com" from Louisianna and they have always matched my color perfectly. As for what they are called, I just refer to them as parts of the spoiler. (left side spoiler, right side spoiler, and center spoiler for the 3 pieces). One can should be plenty.
