Remove the black plastic bezel that covers the guages, and you'll see the two aforementioned nuts at the rear of the cluster. Drop the kick panel under the dash. Once it's removed, use a long flat-bladed screw driver to disengage the speedo cable which is attached to the rear of the cluster. Lowering the steering column a quarter of an inch or so will facilitate cluster removal. I would also advise covering the steering column with masking tape to avoid scratching. Once the cluster is out, you'll have easy access to the bulbs.

Damn, my methode for changing bulbs is a little easier I think. I took some needle nose pliers and wrapped the tips with masking tape for grip. It takes a little work, but I swaped all my bulbs, except the turn signals, with the cluster in place. This was on an '89 iroc.

The method I mention appears to be complicated and time consuming, but, though I had never swapped out a cluster before, the whole business only took about an hour. With the cluster removed, you would, of course, also have the opportunity to swap in a 145 mph speedo as well new bulbs (xenon high-intensity bulbs are highly recommended). Removal also might facilitate mounting white-faced guages.

You shouldn't have to touch the headlight switch to replace your gauges, assuming 82-89. I know nothing about 90-92.

To remove the headlight switch, turn your lites on, and push a button on the bottom of the switch. while pushing that down, pull out the ****.

You just gotta pull really hard.

Pull straight at yourself.

Don't worry, you wont break it.

It' is just got a notch that holds it there really well.

Uh, yeah you can break it if you do it that way. That is why there is a button on the switch to release the ****.

According to these guys, there is a release button on the '90-'92:
