Time to sell the IROC:(

Well I have had her for over a year..13 months exactly, but she broke down today for the last time, she still runs, but I am in reality a college student on a very limited budget and need a car that doesn't break down every 3-4 weeks,I will probably get a honda with leather and a sunroof ,it will not compare to Amanda, that is what I named her,I am hoping to ge 4k for her, body and interior are mint, new 3 month old trans,77k on engine,is that about right,I already had a guy offer me 4k and I have his number....what should I do??I love this car and would love to drop in a 383 and 9" rear and call it a day but I need a commuter that gets good mileageI will always :hail: camaros but lets be honest most thirdgens are unreliable pieces of **** I wish I had enough money to keep her but I won't sellit for awhile maybe 2-3months,need rear brakes and tires before I do sell her

I bought my 86 firebird with 69k miles my junior year of high school and sold it with 155k miles 3 years into college. It got me back and forth from Vermont to Rochester NY reliably every time. The only repairs I made the whole time in college was a starter and a water pump.

My GTA has 130k and so far is quite reliable. My IROC was reliable until I started to screw with it.

And then there's my sport coupe. I bought that thing with 126k miles and a busted trans. I put a junk yard trans in, and since then I've pounded the ***-loving snot out of it on a daily basis. I pound it so hard I've busted the trans mount and the torque arm mount twice! It got me back and forth to Rochester for my last couple years of college and I still drive it daily. I'm over 160k miles now. No matter what I do, I can't kill the car.

My very first car was a 86' Iroc which I sold and have always regretted, so when I saw an 88' Iroc same colors as my old one that needed a little help I couldn't resist. I ended up getting screwed over as the frame was toasted so I bought a 89' RS with a blown engine and swapped the rear end, engine, enitre dash and wiring harness, brakes, etc. I have put more money and time into this car than I will ever get back. After 2 years of pouring money and countless hours into the car I was almost ready to give up but wanting to see it through (and a little ralleying of my friends and dad) I pressed on. Hearing that 350 turn over for the first time gave me chills and I haven't regreted a moment since. The moral....if you not sure, make sure or it will cost you 10X to replace.

I might keep her

but here is what she definately needs..

rear calipers(both)I can get em for $100 andput em on yself

new tires, got original style IROC rims for $100 plus traded my 89 iorc rims with tires with a buddy of mine, but his tires were bald I am going to get white letters if I can...so probably$300 for new tires, although I will probably buy 2 at a time....

and of course the engine,I smell oil under WOT ,so she at least needs a valve seal and guide job,its an 86 remember..original engine only 77k though so as you can see alot of repais, plus I am in between jobs right now, hopefully be getting this driver/delivery job with a blinds instalation company..full time@$8-$10 per hour so we'll see,if I do sell it I will see if I can find another thirdgen, probably a 91-92 350 Z28 but I would only have like $3500-$4000 to spend on one so I don't know...what do you guys think???

Well, the valve seals will hold out. Worst case scenario is youll foul a plug.

As for the brakes, should be an easy fix as well.
Tires are quite expensive, but youll need to put tires on any car you drive, not jsut the IROC.

It seems like to me, that most of the stuff your car needs is basically regular maintanance. NOTHING even remotley bad enough to consider selling her.

Hold out for a while man! Change the oil more often, fix the brakes on a nice sunny weekend day, and get the tires put on.

Just dont sell it... unless that is your just looking for an excuse to get rid of her?!

you don't know how many times i have considered selling my car but luckily my friends convince me that i would regret it for the rest of my life, yes i have poured more money into it that i would be able to get back, but i love that thing to death, and yes it is a six, and i ,like you, have these regular maintence all the time but now, i know i will never sell her, nomader what car you get you are going to have maintence, just with a thirdgen, you have more but thats the price to pay for having such a great car.

DONT SELL IT MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought my 89' rs with 100k miles on her wo 4000.00. It had 305 tbi, 700r4, t-tops, new paint and tires. it had posi trac a perfect interior with the bose system. I put about 40k miles on it and wanted more power, the 305 smoked a little. I found a 92 25th Z that was crashed with no title. It was perfect from the front of the doors back. I changed every piece that I could unbolt a put it on my rs. The Z had 34k on the 350 tpi with a bad trans. I had already gone through my 700r4 so I kept it. Painted the car viper blue with white stripes. I thought about selling her until I ran across the third gen web sight. You guys rock!!!!! Im gona keep her.

P.S. I bought the crashed 92 25th Z for 1 grand

I have a 1986 that i have often thought of getting rid of. First I put it storage my Freshman year of college and biked and walked. Plus I had buddies who had cars in college. Save one camaro. Then I dorve her all summer, well it was not bad not having a car in the Fall/Spring semesters because everyone else drove. Save camaro year two. Year three I brought it up. I dorve so little to save $$$ that only once my last year did I have to get it towed, 475 later it was fixed. Graduation, I still have it. Work one year with a new job get a Mazda pick up, camaro sits in the garage. Save again the camaro, sell the mazda 2 years later buy a Explorer. Save the camaro again. 900 later the camaro is running, there and I drive it on the weekends and occasional after work. I am so glad to still have it because like they say once it is gone it is gone. I have even considered trading fora Z, 2002, but it is not the same. You sit in the car and it has that smell only that car will ever have. If you can keep it, or just store it at home and buy a cheap VW beater. It will run forever and parts are cheap..

300 dollars for tires, theres your problem, that was mine to, cuase I had the camaro everything had to be expensive even if I had no money. Couldn't buy that water pump from advanced for 30 dollars that has a lifetime garentueee, no pe, had to buy the aliuminum pump from Summit Racing that didn't fit for 178 dollars. Had to buy the most expensive tires rather that the ones from Pep Boys for 150 I spent 340, tsk tsk tsk.

SELL OUT

Un4givin89 is exactly right. If you are on a budget then put your camaro on a budget too. lets face it...you'll buy another set of tires after college at least so get some to get you thru. Probably replace the brakes again too, so buy the $19.00 pads and when you are making more money buy the ones you want. Other cars will nickel and dime you to death also or your car payment will kill you for a newer more reliable one. Just don't let it dollar you to death. Sorry...probably sounds like your Dad, but my son starts college next year and we just had this discussion about him wanting $800 worth of rims and tires versus $200 worth of just tires on the perfectly good alloys he has now. You guess what he did. Good Luck!

The secret of having a reliable third-gen is this... leave it alone

The only people who ever say their car runs great are the ones who never took it apart ten times to swap in an engine or an intake or headers... whatever. With all the cars that my friends and I have built over the years the only ones that never broke were our bone stock winter beaters.

I would have to agree. Although sometimes I think they should have spent more, GM has spent thousands of hours finding the right combination of parts that work in unison, and when you change even one of those it can throw somthing else off. My bone stock 86 ran like a swiss watch with over 100K on the clock, but my current one with all kinds of mods is always needing an upgrade to support another upgrade to run right. Not to say I would ever go back!! Just my thought.

No one in there right mind, or left mind for that matter, would take an Import over a thirdgen.

The Idea that an import is more reliable than your car is a friggen myth. Talk to any import owners you know.

I know quite a few living here in Hawaii, and they breakdown just as offten, if not more, than my car.

Whateverz dude. Do whatever you want..........

Every car has a problem....ours seem to be the Valve Seals....They are not hard to replace at all. I am doing mine this sat. Cost me $46 for the Seals, Valve Spring Compressor, and Air Compressor Adapter....It should take a Sat at most and not a hell of skill, take nut off attach compressor, compress spring, remove locks, remove spring, remove seal, drop on new seal, drop on spring, compress the valve spring, insall lock install rocker arm, adjust, put valve cover on...drive.(that is the long directions)

I dunno If I agree with that statement, Heck, I have converted from a 4bbl to TPI, installed a Trans Shift Kit, changed Drums to disks, installed a 3.73, an SLP cam, SLP headers, SLP Catback, Adjustable Fuel Pressure regulator, Baer Brakes, Installed Lumbar/side supporting seats and a 6 way power seat, A Kenwood stereo system the list goes on and on and on ...

Where do you live, this summer I will drive anywhere in the Continental US, and back, and never have to worry about it. Unfortunately I try to keep the miles off. I will be going to Dayton for the T/A Nats though so I hope to see y'all there... anyway...

I think the problem many people have is they do not go mild, but too wild, then they have problems, and call the car a POS. Also only mod one thing at a time. then if you have a problem, you know that's probably where the problem is...

If you smell smoke at WOT, then do not go into WOT. Its like, "Hey Doctor, my arm hurts when I raise it like this." The Doctor replies with, "Then don't do that!."

Another thing is I have friends that will have a really nice car, and something little breaks, they leave it forever then something else breaks, then something else and something else. This usually goes on untill they get tired of the car and say its a piece of crap. Take care of things when they happen, then they do not snowball on you and there are mroe things to take care of than the car is worth.

Just my opinion

John

I dont understand why he is a sell out.

Are you all just joking or are you really serious?

I mean is it like once you buy a thirdgen you can never buy another car , and if you do you are some sort of backstabber or something???

I say BS let him sell the car if he needs to. Buy the import.

And this is for all the people hating on this guy

Im not going to say you're being a sellout, because ive been in that situation too.

But like a few said, it seems like alot of preventative maintenance has to be done to your ride. Tires, Pep Boys Futuras...i bought a set of 4 on sale for my old T/A for 200 bucks. If you can get by on what you have on the IROC now, then you have time to shop around, or even order some online from tire rack...

As for burning oil at WOT, easy solution, dont tramp on the car so often Seriously, think of using a heavier weight oil for a while til you can afford to get the guides and seats replaced.

Brakes you already said you can do yourself. Believe me, sink 600 bucks worth of parts, your ride will be fine for college. You arent going to get a very 'reliable' import for 3 or 4k, just something with some high miles.

IMO, keep the 'ROC

When I went to school in Indiana, I remeber a trap back there from Michigan, and I began to count the number of imports and the number of Domestic cars on the side of the road.

When you consider that MI is the Motor Capial of the world, and we sell more US made cars here in MI than Imports, it is important to note the following. I noticed the EXACT same amount of Imports, on the shoulder as Domestics. down To Anderson from Flint. Both at 8 each. I included some North bounders too when I could see that side.

None of them were Camaros or Firebirds.

When you consider that Domestics probably outsell imports 2:1 in MI and Indiana, the imports must be only half as reliable.

So you can take your honda, I will keep my 'bird

Guys this is getting out of line. I would ask one of the moderators to lock this thread. Name-calling can't be tolerated on thirdgen.org

after all, we're supposed to help each other out, right?

un4givin, your calling nate a pothead is uncalled for. If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say a word. It's ok to give your opinion, but to resort to name calling and taunting is unacceptable. grow up

nate, the comment for un4givin to get an import was also uncalled for.

if you two really feel the need to call each other names, do it on the private messaging section, or do it over email, but NOT on the message boards.

ok?

thanks.

I sold an '86 LG4 Z28 with 78K on the clock. It had bad valve stem seals. The new owner never changed them and last I heard he had 196K miles on it! Go figure.

The Idea that an import is more reliable than your car is a friggen myth. Talk to any import owners you know.

I know quite a few living here in Hawaii, and they breakdown just as offten, if not more, than my car.

Whateverz dude. Do whatever you want..........

:lala:

Lol thats pretty funny actually I was goin to post the exact same picture in my last post, but for some reason it did not attach.

But whatever.

Honestly , I have no real problem with you Mike all you really said was that Im a pothead (so what) and posted some funny pictures.

Now this other guy "kj Rockz" Is actually what inspired me to write my first post about how some people were going over board and calling him a "sell out".

If you read his first post he gets all crazy like IROCME has done him personal injustice or something by wanting to sell his car.

And yes many people in ANY mind would take imports over a 3rd gen...now dont lie....Id take a nice 3000 GT over your car anyday....and dont say you woudent.

And at least put some thought into your posts insted of just

"someone is a punk *** bitch"

ooOoOOoooOooOo

Scary

Nate

Un4givin: If I remember correctly, in your post about you selling your car, you said it was time to get a "reliable Honda", correct?

What I meant to say, is that you are a

PUNK *** BIATCH

Ya and on the flip side where you gonna find a 3000gt for a resonable price? Hmmmm..

How bout when the TwinTurbo breaks? hmmm. Might as well buy another 3rdgen for the price to repair that.

One word....

{I'll let you guess what it is}
