can I paint Rear spoiler of 87 transam.

I was wondering if I can paint my rear spoiler on my transam. it is peeling but I can't spend $500 on a new one right now. also if anybody knows of a place to get it for less than $400 +$100 shipping please post that too. thanks

I painted mine in 1998 and it still looks good.

First I took a D/A sander and sanderd ALL of the paint and primer off, down to the rubber. Then I sanded a little more of the rubber off to get rid of the surface cracks.

I used a flex agent in the primer, shot the color, then used flex agent in the clear coat.

The only thing you might consider is if you have the buldges on the spears. If the spears are not straight, then its starting to go bad, and its only time before you start to get splits.

What is happening is inside the spears on the spoiler they used steel for the clips to clip into. As the steel rusts, it expands, and eventually it will split in those spots.

ya I'd sell it, but like I said it isn't in very good shape. I can try to get ya some pics though. it has some cracks where it attaches to the hatchback lip, and it is also faded on top. let me know if you want the pics though.

Actually I think those rubber ones aren't even supposed to be painted. I got one from the junk yard, and sold it cause those rubber wrap arounds are ugly white. I say get a new fiberglass one. Actaully I think a 4gen will fit, not sure though.

The rubber ones can be painted, they were painted in the factory, (except 85-86), Once I get my fiberglass ones I do not think I will ever go back to rubber.
