The only way is to replace the whole dash and center console. They are completely different after 1990

there was a post on this in the electronics forum.. YES IT IS POSSIBLE.. u have to sand/cut/hack some of the dash. sand down the cluster and re-wire the 2 cluster harsnesses.. i have the cluster wiring, but the dirsctions were deleted from the server..

here is a basic rundown of what u need to do.. (taken from several posts by 99Hawk120 in the electronics forum)

1. grind out ALL 4 of the supports behind the cluster (on in each top corner and the 2 in the middle)

2. grind down all the tabs on the top and bottom of the cluster.

3. fill ALL the holes in the top and sides of the cluster so light doesnt shine thru.

4. OPTIONAL - paint inside of cluster a brighter white. the cluster i got was kinda a **** yellow cloor.

5. drill new screw holes to hold down the cluster (im put them in a diff place then 99Hawk120 did. u just kinda have play with that and find a place ur commfy with)

6. sand down "non-visible area below line" wording and line (the cluster trim from 90-92 covered that, but wont be covered if doing this conversion).

7. re-wire cluster harsness

8. change vss in tranny to electric vss from 90-92 OR use a dakota digital converter OR put in a mechanical speedo (which i head is a major pain) (im using a vss from a 92. 99Hawk120 used a dakota digital)

i think that covered everything..

You can do pretty much anything if you have the time and/or the money.

Hey Man.....Why are you so rude and cruel when someone did it/wants to do it a different way that you think it should be done? Customizing, TLC, and some cleverness is what makes some peoples' cars unique and pleasant to look at. Myself I like it when someone takes the time and effort to "graft" so to speak a piece into a car that wasn't there to begin with and spends every moment making it right. I suppose you would tell the people who put 4th gen consoles into their cars to go buy a 4th gen instead??

It doesn't matter if it's easy to do or not....Life is not easy, things don't just magically appear, if this person wants to keep the original IROC dash's lines, etc, but wants the improved ergonomics and visibility of the '90-up gauges, that is his choice and I wish him luck and hope to see pics posted of it being done, and when completed because I'd like to do the same to my IROC...I'm not going to cop out and go get a whole '90-up dash just because it's easier, I'd rather keep the rest of my dash and see how much of a craftsman that I am and make it work.

Just my $0.02, I wish you luck in doing this Fast1980 and thanks loomdog for your support on this

You got that right, 88roc! Don't let that guy get under your skin. I am new here and have already learned not to take what he says too seriously. He does have some good ideas, but more often than not, he just bashes people. Fast 1980, I think that if you want to customize your ride, got for it! Take it to the next level. Good luck with your project! If you do it, make sure to post pics for us new guys. Peace

is this the un4givin89 bash thread? it would not be easier to swap out the whole dash from a 82-89 for a dash from 90-92.. the gauge cluster would probably look alot better.. there is pics of this swap on the board if u look for them..

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...&postid=444094

un4givin says that a 4th gen swap is easier in that thread too..

i should have posted those links origionally.. thats all the instructions i used for my cluster swap anyways..

Yup, that is exactly right, it was a hack job. Quite a bit of hacking, actually. Never mind that I may have had a damn good reason for doing it the way I did...

By the way, here's a picture of the "hack job"...
