1987 Trans Am Headlights...

I was always under the impression that 82-92 firebird/transam headlights were all the same. But I bought a set of lights off ebay and after first look I don't think they're near as wide as my T/A. The guy said they were off an 84 firebird, my buddy has an 88 firebird and they look identical to his. But my 87 T/A they seem narrower than the ones that are currently on my car (and tied up with nylon cord ). If anyone could shed some light on this, maybe they're different, or maybe it's just a cover over the normal sized lights, I have no idea...

Thanks!

82-86 were the same and 87-92 are the same. You cant interchange them without doing some wiring.82-86 have the larger ***** and 87-92 have the smaller ones.

Do you or do you know anyone who would have a wiring diagram or the pinouts for the headlight motor swap? I'm pretty sure I have pre-87 headlight motors so I'm wondering if that's even possible.

Thanks!

Are you talking about the headlights, the headlight assemblies, or the headlight motors?

If you're dealing with the motors, you don't want to convert to the older motors. They're problem prone. The newer design is much easier to work with.

Yeah and I was looking at them lastnight, the mounting bracket in the back isn't the same so maybe I just need to sell them back on eBay and find a set for my car. Thanks guys!

I found a beautiful white 86 Trans am here in the wreckers. It's got a mint white spoiler on it to..just in case anyone is interested. Anyway, I'm looking ot remove the black plastic covers that's around the headlights. Seeing as this is in 86, will the black plastic covers fit my 1989 GTA? They look the same, but these are older ones.

The headlights are in absolutely mint condition. That's why I'm taking the plastic around. Even the PONTIAC writing is perfect. No rims on the car.

does the car have a dash pad in it?

hey clutch save yourself the hassle. if your motors run but dont lift then go buy yourself some 15/32 size bearings from your local bearing supply. crack open your old motors and observe. loosen the top part of the motor where the **** is. DONT remove it, just loosen it. inside the side cover is where your concern is. ther are 3 plastic nylon bearings that have gone bad.
replace them with the 15/32 bearings and you will be set.it will tke some wiggleing to get the gear out but it will pop out. be sure to lube everything with a decent grease .i did this fix and saved myself $165 per side. i fixed mine for about $6.
if you have any ques bout the fix, E-mail me .

83, a friend of mine called me up and said the tail lights are in perfect shape. I pulled mine off an 88 Firebird back in the day and used that plastic polishing compound from Eastwood Company..man, they are like new. Anyways, do you want these things? I'm going on Saturday.
Oh, the dashpad is there but isn't any good. (scratched)

Richard: Cool man, thanks for the info. That will most likely work because they do spin the ***** they just won't lift the light. I'll have to try that when I get home. Thanks again!

glad i could help. i was at the F-body. org event here in
memphis (my home) my lights started doing the fluttering thing. well i got a few of the other bird third genners to take a gander and they were all baffled.
i posted a why is it doing this on the mailing list and one of the listers sent me a personal mail telling me what to do. i snapped to it and saved myself a lot of money and hassle.
kinda embarasing when your on a date and ya hafta roll the windows down, stck your arm in, hit the switch, help the lights up and then be on your way.

So I noticed you said they were plastic nylon bearings, do I need to find some just like those in 15/32" or can I just use steel ball bearings in place?

Steel will work fine. I've got them in mine right now. They've been in for almost a year, and no problems. I know a lot of us have done this, so somebody else might have better input as to the longevity. If you run a search, you can probably find a link to somebody's website that has pictures. They are helpful, since you can see what things will look like before you take it apart. It is easy to do, you shouldn't have any problem.

thanx for catching me Mike S. i didnt mention to use steel bearings. that is what you want.
the place you are looking to take completly apart is the side cover , it has 3 screws holding it on. be sure to take care when removing the side cover as there is a gasket that is easy to tear .

Steve, I'm very interested in the tailights, but do you have any idea how much they would cost + shipping to western manitoba? I found some 85-90 TA tailights in the US for $35 US, but I don't know how much it would cost for shipping, duty, etc. I'm hoping this set you found would be alot cheaper, let me know, thanks.

also, I'm going to sign up for pay pal so we might be able to arrange something that way.
