Manual windows SUCK!!

Hey guys I am gettin tired of leaning across the car to put down the passenger window. I have been doing it for the past 3 years and it is gettin old, real old, and I am soooo jelous of you guys that can do it with the power of the button. So this summer I want to put power windows in. I know I am gonna need to find new door panels and buttons, and of course the motor but whut else will i need? I tried doing a search and nothing came up. So if some one has a list of all things I will need to start looking for that would be GREAT, also if you guys know how to do the swap that would be GREAT too. and if some one wants to sell me their window motor and all that other crap that goes with it, you can have my first born child!! Thanks alot guys

Pork

*** Just saw the other post... But if some one still wants to tell me too.....that would be kewl. I am lazy

** Tried to find that tech article...no luck

I've considered the same... I just put the window down and leave it down... of course I'd like to be able to put it up when it starts to rain without pulling over to the side of the road... All you need is the guts of the donor door, it's panel and the wiring that connects it all to the electrical system... When I asked the same question one person suggested that it would be easier just to buy a new door... but that IS the expensive way.

"POWER WINDOWS"

If I were to get another Firebird maybe in the not to soon future,
I would prefer to get one with no Power Window .
My choice I guess.

there was a link in the other post of a company that makes aftermarket power windows conversions.. that SHOULD have all the stuff u need.. another option, the best buy in fresno does power window conversions for $100 a window ($50 power door lock).. thats what im gonna do.. replaced the window motor in my 91 (when i still had it.. i never shouldve sold that car) and never could get the window to sit correctly again..

i'm very tempted to add power windows to one of the birds this summer, it's got manual crank windows and the a/c system has no charge (can't even hear a hiss if i push in the high side valve).

i've recently acquired a pair of z28 window regulators, motors and associated wiring. job looks straightforward enough, drill out the big rivets that hold the old manual regulators to the doors and secure new power regulators in place.

i looked at universal power window conversion kits, but for reliability reasons, i've decided to go the oe gm route.

for universal kits, you remove crank handle and slide a motorized toothed ring over where manual crank used to be. sounds like a good idea, but in actual use, the teeth on the motor ring appear to strip out rather easily.

replacing your whole door with one with power windows could work too as other people have pointed out, but it could be difficult to find one in good shape with the desired paint color.

I hate power windows. I have been stuck with windows down to many times and now I am swapping my doors in my 84 and 82 for manual doors. power locks is fine but what do you do when the power motor for the windows goes dead??? I don't know of a way to crank it up if it is raining out. power windows are nice when they are working but when they go dead you could have nothing but trouble that could cost you alot if you don't have a garage to put your car in, (say at a friends house when visiting) I have 2 power pass doors, and one drivers door that I would be more than will to trade straight up for manual doors as long as they are in equall condition. the doors are all in very good shape. one is black and on my car right now but will soon be comming off. the other 2 are on my 82 and grey in color. they will need to be cleaned up but they are not floppy from rust or dented all up. the drivers door does not have the locking mech hooked up in it. I just bought the 82 and so thats why the locking mech is not hooked up, the way I got it. anyone want to drive over and have an afternoon of swapping doors??? I live in southeastern Minn in a town called Kasson. about 15 miles west of Rochester. anyone have any ideas on how to crank up or down a dead power window??? I would like to hear it. here is a link to my car so you can see the condition of one of the pass door on my 84 Trans Am. the ground effect will not go with it nor will the door panels or arm rest. you would prob want to use your own anyway. http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/84transam/

thirdgen window regulators are much more reliable than the flimsy cable driven window regulator setups used in many modern cars.

failures in older thirdgens can often be traced back to corrosion on electrical connectors, worn out motor brushes, improper alignment of window tracks and insufficent lubrication on window tracks.

manual the way to go

does anyone know how to crank the window down if it is not working???fuse is good, pass door goes down fine. I checked the plug connection and that is ok. the window regulator is just palin dead as a door nail. I want the door panel off the door but with the window up the only way to get it is to break the window. anyone have any ideas?? I have heard that these regulators have ALOT!!! of tension behind them and don't feel like getting my hand broken. http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/84transam/

Being a conspiracy theorist I feel that you are punished by GM for not buying the power windows. I have probably owned a dozen cars and the only ones that ever gave me a problem were the ones with manual windows. ie fall off track, band would break etc. Never had a problem with the power ones except that GM makes the motor so sloooooowwwwwww!

What about this guys - I've got 2 1985 Z-28 doors that are set up for power windows / mirrors / locks and i was thinking what it would take to plug it into my car. Obviously i'm lacking the controls (which mount on the middle console) but what else? Its prob more of a hassle than i want anyway but it'd kinda be cool...

HOLY ***** PROJECT=TA!!!! you have some serious money in the entertainment system in your car. I don't think many movie theaters have that much in their sounds system. honestly I don't know much about stereo systems(amps, crossovers, whatever) but it sounds like you have most of your money in your car wrapped up in just that. what about the motor, is it a 305??350?? 383?? etc. I'd like to see that car in person. do you ever show your car off at the Car Craft Show in St. Paul Minnesota ever?? (in July)dont get me wrong. it may sound like I am knocking your car but I'm not at all. it all sounds prety damn impressive.

if you're considering buying a pair of "power doors", look closely at what power features the door actually has. Some thirdgens may have power locks but not power windows, others may have power windows but not power locks.

are some fully loaded doors out there too with the works, power windows, power locks, and electrically controlled exterior mirrors.

yeah I know for a fact some doors have power mirrors, door locks and windows. I had an 83 Trans Am once that had doors with those power options.
