Questions about 1LE spec disc brakes in the rear ...
Right now my 91z has drum brakes in the rear. I had this plan of buying the rear end and disc brakes from a 92 B4C off some guy, but the deal never went through. I remember how great the brakes used to be when I had a 92 B4C of my own. I want to do some upgrading on my 91 z. I have a few questions (some might be basic, sorry).
1. What setup came on the 92 B4C rears. Was it the same as the 1LE cars? Or did all 91-92 Z28's have the same setup? What were the specs?
2. Would that brake setup fit on an aftermarket rearend (maybe a Moser 12 Bolt?) How about a Borg Warner 9 bolt rearend? How hard would it be to install?
2. Is there a company that sells a dual piston caliper setup for the rear disc brakes that will still work/fit with the stock 16's? I'm thinking SSBC but I cant find anything on their website.
Thanks for any help anyone might have.

Crazy, This is Benny, hows it. Here is what I know.
On my old '92 Z28 I had rear disc brakes, the B4C uses the same brakes. (12" PBR"s). On that '92 Z28 I had took off the old 10 bolt rearend and put on a 9 bolt out of a '90 IROC and used the same brakes, they bolted right up. I do not know about the 12 bolt.
At ABES wrecking yard in Pearl City I saw a Trans AM with the 9 bolt and rear discs still intact, but that was 4 months ago, probably gone now but worth checking.
Good Luck!

Ok cool, so all 91-92 Z28's that came with disc brakes (1LE's and B4C's too) had 12" rear rotors and single piston PBR calipers. And they bolt onto the 9 bolt rearends. Thanks for the info Benny! I have a Borg Warner 9 Bolt on my 90 RS (swapped it in), but it has the old crappy iron calipers. I'm planning to put that rear on my 91 but I want to upgrade the brakes first. Thanks again dude!
SLP_GTA do you have any more info on Andy's setup? Or do you know where I can read about it? Thanks!!

Here is what is included in the drum to disc rear axle conversion kit;
1) New PBR loaded calipers.
2) New rotors.
3) New stainless steel prebent hardlines.
4) New "Earls" stainless steel flex lines.
5) New parking brake cables for your application.
6) New axle seals (you might as well replace them while you are in there) so I include them too
7) Special axle housing adapters to duplicate the original disc brake housings.
8) Shim templates to precisely locate the new mounting holes in the axle housing flange. They are also used to adjust the backing plate out from the axle housing. These have been discontinued by GM for a long time, so I have developed my own improved design.
9) New brake line/hose mounting brakets. These are also unavailable from GM.
10) New drill bits to modify the axle flange to the disc brake type.
11) Parking brake cable guides to keep the parking brake cables from rubbing against the axle housing.
12) Posi gear oil.
13) Tube of silicone to reseal the rear cover.
14) All of the various clips, bolts, and other fasteners to complete the job.
15) And best of all, I even include the correct GM combination (proporioning) valve for your application.
16) I also include the "ANDYZ28 1LE Plus CD ROM" Free!
All for $731.00 plus shipping.
Thanx,ANDYZ28

hey Andy, do you know anything about fitting stock 99 LS1 disk brakes to a 9bolt that presently has the crappy stock disks??
also, will these fit in the stock 15" z28 wheels?
will the 89-92 rears fit in the stock 15" z28 rims?

I am currently working on making the LS1 swap easier. Custom prebent hardlines, etc. I will let you know how it is going in the spring.
Don,t know about LS1 and 15" clearance.
'89-'92 will clear stack 15" wheels.
Thanx,andyZ28

i recently picked up a set of ls1 rears for a really good price. In hope of getting rid of the craptacular stock disks. they look like an improvement to even the 89-92. I really need an e-brake but since i have the 9 bolt they don't seem to swap too easily.
Whatever you come up with please keep me posted Laiky@aol.com

So I guess nobody makes an aftermarket dual piston rear setup that works with the 16's? I know Wilwood makes a rear 4 piston caliper setup with 12" discs but I dont know if those will fit the stock 16's (trying to find out from Wilwood).
Wow so the stock 15's will fit on a 1LE car? Thats amazing!!

Hey Andy.......
I'm just over in Chester, maybe 15 minutes from Midlo...
Anyway, I'm scoring a complete 3.23 posi 10-bolt disc rear from a '91 Z28. I'm getting complete rear, calipers, rotors, cable and hoses.
What snags do you see if I swap this thing into my 85 IROC that currrently has the drum brake 10 bolt?
Thanks

Thats a dirrect swap. You might wan to look into getting the proportioning valve off of a 91 or 92 though.
