Converting to rear discs?

I'm wondering what you guys have done/where you've gone, to get the brake caliper mounting plate as seen in the Tech Article of going from drum to LS1 disc rear brakes?

John, Any 4th gen '98-02 LS1 brake assemblies from and salvage yard car can bolt right up to any 3rd gen housing, even the drum rear 3rdgen housing. That tech article shows how toi simply cut the drum axle flange down and drill two more holes making it a disc rar axle flange and ready to accept any third or 4th gen brake backing plates.

I have a 4th gen Wilwood LS1 kit on my 3rdgen 10bolt disc axle, it bolted right to it. Here's the shot of the backing plate from the Wilwood kit. Same as the LS1 factory only I have larger rotors and fixed mounted 4POT calipers. Same internal parking drum though.

Hang on... are you saying that the stock 3rd gen drum backing plates can be used?

The tech article is for drilling the backing plate bolts, for the 4th gen 'drum' plate?

Nope.

The 4th gen backing plate looks identical to the one I posted. I am talking about the 3rdgen axle flange. The 3rd gen drum axle flange can be cut down to resemble the 3rd gen disc brake axle flange pictured below.

THEN you can simply bolt on the 4th gen backing plate from the factory 4th gen LS1 brake setup.

dean, are you happy with the kit from wilwood? its pretty easy on the pocket, and i need some brakes to go on my new 9", and dont want to screw around with honing out and redrilling my ls1 backing plates to fit it, so doward, i guess i have a set of rear ls1 brakes for sale if youre interested

The inside dia of the 3rd and 4th gen backing plates are the same exact diameter cutout. Thus they are both hubcentric on the axle housing . they self center themselves when bolting on.

Just first cut off (red dotted lines) the top of the drum flange (shown in blue) and then bolt on the 4th gen backing plate using the two bottom bolts. At this point you can use the backing plate top two mount holes as guides to drill the additional two upper holes into the 3rdgen drum alxe flange(green arrows pointing to holes needing to be drilled).

I am very happy with them. I do have new Moser axles and a new Auburn RR version posi in this housing that helps reduce floating axle endplay to a minumum so I do not suffer from pad knockoff in a hard corner.

I also could not stand Wilwoods brake compounds (any of them, I tried several different ones including the so called streetable "T" compound) and all of them made a low speed moaning noise with street use. Going to an EBC Greenstuff pad is a must and I have been happy since. EBC is the only matching front and rear compound I could find to fit my front 6POT calipers for street use.

Let me know what you want for them. I can get a set, lifetime warranty, through work for $112. That's calipers + pads...

PM me, let me know what you want for the whole set, ok? Rears only

Doward, you have a pm

Dean, got a question on your set up: Are you still running the J50 master cylinder and the J65 prop valve with the plug mod? I was rumaging through old posts and saw thats what you had, but wasnt sure if you had the current setup on the car. I guess im going with that rear kit, and hopefully ebmiller will make some more wilwood brackets soon, so i will also be running that caliper (1 3/4 pistons) so they have a little more piston area, think that would make any difference with a J50?

No I am not. That prop mod lead to later problems still. It was a temporary fix and I addressed it later in the thread (Under a different screen name from multiple bannings)

I changed the prop valve imediately when the fronts started to diminish pressure also.

I am running the pre-'89 1/2 1LE combination valve part # 14089694 or 14089496 if I recall correctly. Its one of those #'s.

I do still have the original master cylinder, not the 1LE. My pedal modulation is fine with the brake upgrades. I have not lost feel with the smaller bore MC.
