LS1 fronts

LS1 fronts

Is there a way to get or make a hub for the large 1LE bearings other than buying the 1LE rotors and cutting them down? I can get the LS1 stuff for nothing and could cut down my stock rotors but would like to have the large bearings as well.

Transmission: A4, A4, slated to be a T56
You can use a 1LE hub and a thicker bracket, it will just push everything out a bit further. The only difference in bearings is the outer one, the inners are the same.

I think there are some other GM cars with our bolt pattern that you could use for the hub that use the larger bearing, aren't there? 70-81 F-body, maybe?

You are correct. The 2nd gens use a rotor VERY similar to a 1LE rotor but it's not as large, 10.5" in diameter vice 12" but it does use a larger Set 2 outer bearing. I just turned one into a hub for my '70 RS setup and it's a nice thick hub.

PS: Clarification: The Set 2 bearing isn't "larger" so to speak, it fits into the 3rd gen hub but it's all metal and is just a bit different, taller than a Set 34. I'll post pics of it all later this weekend..

Out of curiosity, have you checked to see if one of those will work on a 3rd gen spindle (bearing spacing)?

It's getting coated as of today and will be back Friday so I'll check over the weekend. I know it will pretty much fit... I have a 3rd gen hub currently on my 2nd gen spindle but the bearing heights will be different. See if you can follow this:

I have a 3rd gen standard hub on the 2nd gen spindle right now. With bearings installed (Set 6 inner and a Set 2 outer) and a bearing washer and castle nut finger tight, the cotter pin hole is higher than the top of the castle nut. If you insert the pin into the hole, the nut can still turn a bit until it hits the pin as you loosen it. I can install a 2nd washer and the problem goes away so there is a slight height difference in the bearing area.

As for comparison, the 2nd gen hub is almost identical to a 1LE hub. The hub face is at the same height as the 1LE hub but the bearings are spaced a bit differently, the 2nd gen hub has a greater distance between bearings as I've described above. The cotter key holes are at different heights, so they don't exactly interchange but they're close.

The spindles still need to be modded for LS1 calipers correct?
