E-brake Problems

First, I'd like to say that I did do a search, and browsed through the first several pages of results.

My car failed state inspection for the e-brake. Sometimes, I can get it to grab and it seems to work pretty good. Other times, it does not seem to be holding at all.

I have engaged/disengaged the lever dozens of times, trying to work any corrosion loose, and also sprayed parts of the cables with some WD-40. This has not solved the problem.

What might cause this sporadic problem? Is this an issue of adjustment, or parts being worn?

I hope to find some time to get the car up in the air this week, and would like to have an idea of what to look for.

Thanks for your time.

Dave

It could be a number of things ranging from piston actuator being misaligned to frozen caliper guide pins to stuck pistons. I recommend that you rebuild the calipers or give them a good cleaning, including the guide pins. There's also some adjustment that can be made but I've rarely felt that this is a problem, most PBR rear calipers work really well and this adjustment is seldom necessary:

If you'd like a set of PBR caliper rebuild instructions, PM me with your address and I'll get one right out to you.
