Re: 82 z-28 e-brake problem
If you don't know where to look under the car start with the backing plate on the rear drums, their should only be two "lines" that go into the backing plate. One will be the brake line, the other "line" cable will be the e-brake cable. Trace them forward until they meet. Then have someone apply the e-brake. See if it moves. If so then the cables aren't tight in the backing plate, or they aren't tight inside the drum, or you need to adjust it where they connect to the hand lever.
If the cables move all the way to the drums and everything is "tight" (the whole cable dosen't move) then you need to take the drums off and look at it.

Re: 82 z-28 e-brake problem
ok...how would i go about adjusting how its connected to the hand lever? i know for a fact that the hand lever isnt working correctly so i can start by checkin that if i know what im looking for
Re: 82 z-28 e-brake problem
Does the hand lever move and ratchet fine?
If so then it is fine.
This is drum brakes.
In my Haynes (should have looked earlier) it says that if it travels less then 13 clicks or more the 17 clicks the e-brake needs adjusted. So you know for later.
Pull the handle 2 clicks.
You will have to find where both rear cables come together. Sorry I don't have a clue where it is, but if you follow one you will find this. You will have both rear come into a "metal plate" On the other side you will have one. That single cable comes from the hand lever. Thru the "plate" it has a nut on the back side. So long as it just need adjusted all you have to do is tighten that nut, untill it's "tight"
Step
1 Click e-brake handle 2 clicks.
2 Put car on jack stands. (So you can get under it)
3 Find equalizer bracket. "metal plate"
4 Hold the cable stud with a wrench. (single cable) Turn adjusting nut with another wrench, until the left rear wheel can just be turned in reverse (using two hands) But is locked when trying to turn forward.
5 Release e-brake. Make sure both wheels turn forward and backward with no drag.
If adjusting it dosen't get it tight enough then your cables have been streched to far and you need new cables.
If you have any more questions just ask.
Hope that was enough to help.

Re: 82 z-28 e-brake problem
Thought I would do something productive and take a pic of mine.
My car is the 89 in my sig.
If yours is different it won't be much.
I know the pics of my car are bad. But it is over the driveshaft. I took the pic from right around the diff.
The last pic is of my 89 F-250. But it shows the equlizer thingy. What ever I called it earlier. It will look a little different, but you can the the rear cables and the cable off the brake pedal. You can see the passanger side cable in the pics of my car and just see the plate all three go to.
