Shaking when braking at speed

Just found this out on a Camaro cruise...

My car shakes real bad, I think from the back, when I put the brakes on moderately hard and at higher speeds (70km/h or higher) (40mph?). Its not a warped drum or rotor feeling but rather a shaking feeling in the whole car (not the brake pedal). As soon as I take my foot off the brake it disapears. During normal gradual braking it is nice and smooth like new.

Any ideas?

Re: Shaking when braking at speed

sounds like a warped rotor/drum

if you are sure thats not the case check to see if the rear suspension, ie control arms and panhard are in good working order.

Re: Shaking when braking at speed

It felt like wheel hop to me too. Definately not warped brakes as I would be able to feel those at any speed braking and it was too violent to be that.

Re: Shaking when braking at speed

does the steering wheel shake real bad when braking and stop when you release the brakes? If it does than its definitely your brakes. If not I would lift your car and check for bent or broken suspension parts.

not necessarily, ive had a few cars where you could only feel the warped rotor when applying the brakes at higher speeds 40mph+. changed rotors and everything went back to normal. and as stated before, check everything that holds the rear end in the car.

good luck

Re: Shaking when braking at speed

New rear shocks, replaced all bushings with poly. Now its rock solid.

Re: Shaking when braking at speed

Dennis...do you think the problem was primarily with the shocks or the bushings? I have driven a lot of junk cars earlier in life...and I found out that if shocks are bad...they can set up a harmonic resonance in the car similar to what you were talking about.

Or do you think that the worn bushings in the rear actually did cause minor wheel hop?

Just curious...

Re: Shaking when braking at speed

Probably both but its just a guess. Maybe the extra play in the bushings let the back end jolt around a bit more and the shocks were so worn they could not damp that extra movement. The shocks were literally toast, I can compress them and they do not rebound even over time. DEAD

Re: Shaking when braking at speed

on my Buick it was doing this exact same thing horribly bad for a long time and then the Rack actually broke and now that its fixed it is 80-90% better. Soooo id say check all you tie rods, center link, and idler arm. They could be warn out and be causing the shaking. I know its weird but it fixed my car.

Re: Shaking when braking at speed

It is interesting how whether the car if FWD or RWD...there can be some troubleshooting similarities...including dead shocks/struts and worn bushings.

Re: Shaking when braking at speed

Very odd i know, theres still a slite shake but i know thats bcuz it needs a set of rotors on it. Still the stock ones on it with tons of miles, the odometer dont work so yea.

Re: Shaking when braking at speed

Could be a Cracked drum? I just ran into this. Higher speed tend make my car shake with harder braking.
