big front brakes/ drum to disc rear

Just curious about upgrading my front disc brakes on an 87 GTA, I was looking at Wilwood 140-2992-B kit.
As for rear drum to disc I was looking at SUM-BK1322 kit.
Are these good kits or is there something else I should be looking at?
Thanks

Re: big front brakes/ drum to disc rear

i believe the willwood kit is not a large rotor kit, its stock sized and for drag use, not for street use.

the rear kit i've never seen, so i dont know much about it, but for the money you may want to consider swapping in a 4th gen rear. It has a much better disc brake setup and a better posi unit, if its posi, and will most likely cost less than the kit you listed.

As for fronts, the common upgrades are a ls1 12" rotor 2 piston caliper, or c5 vette 13" rotor and 2 piston caliper. Kits area available from a few places, bigbrakeupgrade, and Ebmiller here on TGO.

You will have to swap out the prop vavle to a disc/disc valve as well.

Re: big front brakes/ drum to disc rear

You think its just easier/ cheaper to replace the rears with a kit or just find a whole rear end from a donor 4th gen?
Whats the link to Ebmiller?

Re: big front brakes/ drum to disc rear

I just did the rear LS1 swap on mine. If you don't mind a couple cuts, drilling 4 holes, some brake line work, and work up something with the emergency brake cable, then that's the route to take. Mine was easier though since I already had the LS1 patterned flanges on my axle. Other route might be to get the plates from Ebmiller to use I believe it was LT1 rear calipers and rotors.

Re: big front brakes/ drum to disc rear

OP, what wheels are you running? Your choice will mainly depend on that and your budget. Swapping a whole rear may be more economical for you if you can get the posi, brakes, and gearing you want. Otherwise a brake swap to Lt1 or LS1 brakes will be your best bet, these would give you 11.6" and 12" rotors respectively. With the right plates you can go to a full 13" rear rotor if you want and use the LT1 calipers.

As for the fronts, concentrate your efforts here as they do the most work. Again, depends on your wheel choice and use.

Re: big front brakes/ drum to disc rear

If it's GTA, shouldn't it be disc rear? Athough the drums are probably better than the delco discs anyway...........

Its an 87 GTA, rears are drum.
I think some came with small rear disc brakes before 89 but were no good.
My gf has PBR rear disc on her 89 GTA, Im assumiung these are better brakes to have?

82-88's were equipped with 10.5" rotors and Delco-Moraine iron calipers. Though they have a bad rep on site, I thought they performed adequately. I swapped to PBR's because, yes, they're simply better.

Re: big front brakes/ drum to disc rear

My 87 GTA has the Delco calipers & while everyone calls them bad, mine certainly aren't weak. Maybe I'm just lucky?

I had a deer dart out & at 60 mph, I locked up all 4 tires! Certainly can't say my Delcos are weak....

Doesn't mean I think they are better than PBRs or 4th gens, no. The discs are still tiny & I want bigger discs.

But why does that 87 GTA have drums? Not really a true GTA, or has the rear end been swapped out?

Some cars just got drums, even some Z28s. Cost concerns or just getting rid of parts they had?

Yeah...I knew that was common for the last years, as supplies ran low & they didn't wanna replenish parts stock since the 4th gen was coming out,....But in 87?
