Upgrading pads?

I have the stock braking on my 89 Iroc with disc front and rear. Can I find some better pads than the usual cheap ones? If possible something that will not eat my discs in 3000miles.
Thanks

You might consider Hawk brake pads.

Re: Upgrading pads?

They seem to do the job.
Are the pads the same front and rear? (Camaro IROC Z 89, with rear disc and not 1LE edition).

No, the fronts are the common Delco-Moraine iron calipers found on the fronts of all 82-92 thirdgens (except the 1LE, of course). An 89 equipped with rear discs should have PBR alum calipers.

No, the calipers are the same. If you have an 89 9-bolt, you should have PBR's, IIRC. Recheck the link above. I screwed the pouch the first time.

Re: Upgrading pads?

I have the older rear calipers (83 car). The same Hawk HPS pads fit both front and rear. They stop ok, but I am looking forward to upgrading (replacing) the brakes.

Re: Upgrading pads?

I am running HP+ front pads and HPS rear pads and the car stops amazingly well considering I don't even have the PBR brakes. However, I wouldn't recommend the HP+ pads for a street vehicle... way to much brake dust.

I actually have another unused set of HP+ front pads and HPS rear pads that I have never used that I am thinking of selling. I took them out of the packaging but they never even touched a rotor or caliper. I had them as a spare set incase the pads cracked when I was autocrossing, but I won't need them anymore becasue I'm upgrading to LS1 brakes. I'll try and find where I put them and the exact part numbers.

Re: Upgrading pads?

Are you confident the brakes are the same for the 9 bolt.
Because here is an extract from the spohn description:
Note: Will only fit 10 Bolt Rears on 1989-1992 F-Body equipped with PBR aluminum caliper rear disc brakes.

I know my calipers are aluminum, but I want to be sure with a warning like this.

PBR's, regardless of rear ends or years, are exactly the same. Spohn's description should read: Fits 89-92 F-Bodies equipped with PBR alum caliper rear disc brakes.

As an FYI, the only difference between the 9- and 10-bolt with PBR calipers/rotors is the backing plate. All else is the same.
