need help with deciding on brakes
Hi, ok the brakes on my IROC with 4wheel disk brakes flat out suck, you have to step atleast half way on the brake to even get them to grab and all the way to stop and doing that still barely stops you and good luck on trying to get the tires to drag. And when you do step on the brake it sounds very airy and just dont give you any confidence in braking.
And i absolutely need at minium good brakes since well im not going be driving like a granny in her caddi going to church on sunday and here in oregon we dont have the prettiest weather. I am terrified everytime we drive the car because the brakes suck so bad. and i know this is a problem with even when the cars were new.
So iv been looking at a few brake kits at summit, i cant afford a nice big brembo brake kit and i need the brakes to fit under the stock 16" IROCs. So what are your opinions on these kits?
http://www.summitracing.com/search/Y...?Ns=Rank%7cAsc
I'm mostly looking at the summit brakes since the rotors as drilled/slotted and iv heard alot about summit's parts are often repacked products. Anyhow what do you think i would benifit the most from of those 3 or is there anything better for an comparable price? Also i would probaly buy some new calipers since mine are rusted out anyhow and are the cheap $15 dollar ones fine?
So do you think i'll be fine with an pad/rotor kit and cheap calipers? Or should i just go right ahead and buy lines, master, and booster all at once?
btw if its not already obvious im just looking for replacing the front brakes.
And for reference the car only has 27k miles, was sitting in garage for about 5 yrs rarely driven and then sat in driveway for 5yrs never driven and is now rarely driven but soon to be DD. Thanks.

It sounds like the brakes are suffering from lack of use.
You won’t need non-stock parts unless you’re going racing.
Those $15 reman calipers will work good as new.
Probably the biggest bargain on the planet.
Replace the brake hoses.
Don’t neglect the rears.
You only need to replace the master and booster if they’re not working properly, but now is a good time to move up to chrome.
You want ceramic pads, great for those last second whoa-downs from a triple-digit speed into the exit ramps.

Re: need help with deciding on brakes
im in the same boat but im thinking of ditching the one piston caliper and moving to a 2 piston with more clamping force and some cross driled rotor. summit has some quick change calipers with pads that fit stock under your 16inch rim for around 430 bucks. but not sure if there any good. i need to read some reviews on them.

Re: need help with deciding on brakes
The two piston SSBC calipers you are talking about have a smaller piston area than the stock brakes. Which means you will need to press the brake pedal down harder to maintain the same stopping rate as stock. I would say its not worth the effort or money.
My best $200 solution would be replace the stock calipers with rebuilt ones, new rotors, new pads, new rubber lines, new fluid.
My best $700 solution would be a LS1 brake conversion.
My best $1000 solution would Ed's Wilwood FSL conversion.

BTW, if you haven't invested in a year-specific shop manual, I highly recommend your doing so.

Re: Brake Dance
Larger rotors/calipers won't fit without spindle modification. For prices, check a site such as http://www.rockauto.com/index.php?a=...rtsgascappromo
