Brake Line Flaring

This will be perhaps the crudest illustration. I'm sorry about it guys, but I need to do it to illustrate my Problem. I am bending some new brake line for my 4th Gen Posi Axle. The Bending is going well, but i have a problem -- The Flaring. On one end, there's one kind of female end and on the other end there is another. The center flex line has a raised cone inside, and the Brake end has a recessed cone (see my Crude illustration). My Flaring tool only has one tip. it makes a Cone like the Illustration on the right. I went to Advance Auto tonight and there was a kit there that had tips that looked like different size punch tips. No Chamfer, just like the end of a Punch. Is that what i need?

Shot 1: My Crude Illustration (Left side is the Brake Side)
Shot 2: My Bending Progress
Shot 3: The old brake end of the hard line.

Re: Brake Line Flaring

Here's a Shot of why i decided to bend up some new brake lines. Someone patched this line with a Compression Fitting.

Re: Brake Line Flaring

the 3rd pic, is a bubble flare, it has the conical end on the male brake nut. the other you are illustrating is a inverted flare. it shouldnt be used in that t-fitting, it should be a bubble like the rest. maybe you got the wrong part?

i you are going to use it, you need a "inverted" (or also called "double") flare tool

the double flare will have a die similar to the one in you bubble flare fit, and also a pointed tip that formed the inside of the flare after the first crush is made.

****

ahh theres the problem, you 82 uses inverted flares, not the bubble flare used in the later 85ish to 02 cars. i assume that flex/t block you have it for you 82? that explains why the flare are different.

Re: Brake Line Flaring

The Rear is off of a 1994 Camaro. All of the hoses are for that year of car. I think that i just Botched the whole thing. Damn shame though because i did a bang up job of bending that line and now i have to redo everything. I was using a "Single" Flaring tool. I'm now Practicing on my scraps of line to learn how to make this flare.

Re: Brake Line Flaring

Light Grease is the Key. I was struggling with the Flaring and most of the time the flare went off center because it was too hard to turn the Clamp. The problem was Friction. It's similar to using a tap or die, if you want nice threads you need lubrication. I'm a Rookie at all of this, but i figured that a very small dab of grease that you can wipe off when you're done wouldn't affect the brake fluid in the line provided you were sparing with the grease. I thought about the problem and came up with this solution. I also only turn the clamp about a quarter turn and then back off. Repeat that a few times and it will get the job done. this helps keep the tool on center. It takes a little longer, but you get it right the FIRST TIME.

Re: Brake Line Flaring

a drop or two of brake fluid will work well too to lubricate the flare tool dies
