brake booster removal

Do I have to tear my dash apart to remove the brake booster? I'm painting the engine bay on my IROC and really don't feel like tearing the dash out. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Re: brake booster removal

if you remove the under dash panel, you can get to the bolts, its a PITA, but totally do-able.

Re: brake booster removal

If It's just a matter of removing the kick panel that sounds doable, I just didn't want to remove the dash pad, gauges drop the steering column Etc... Thanks for the quick reply.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: brake booster removal

It's not a PITA at all; doesn't take 5 minutes, even for a complete moron and slowpoke like me. Somebody smart and quick like you can probably do it ALOT quicker. Total piece o cake.

seriously, i wont call this a piece of cake, it takes some time. totally do-able, but not a cake walk. bottom 2 bolts are pretty simple, but the upper 2 are buried by various linkages and cables/wires, so they take a little more time.

Re: brake booster removal

Well I got it off, I would classify it as a PITA. The drivers side no problem but the top right was very difficult, because the studs are so long you need to use a deep well socket, and then you need a universal joint and an extension, because of the extreme angle it's very difficult to turn the ratchet more than a half turn before the u-joint locks up.I gave up and used the air ratchet to overcome the binding of the u-joint.
I think I'm going to replace it while I have it out, I wouldn't want to do that again!!! Getting to darn old and don't bend like that anymore.one more thing to add in case someone is reading this in the future it helps to drop the steering column.

Re: brake booster removal

it also depends on the year of the car. its a nightmare to remove the booster on my 86, for whatever reason it has a lot more crap stuffed up around the steering column. Had to drop the column a bit and use a bunch of extensions to remove the top bolts.. my 92 on the other hard, was pretty straight forward, and i would reach everything from under the dash with little drama.
