drum to disc conversion?
I have a 92 RS that came stock with front disc and rear drum brakes. I dont know much about brakes but it's about time the drums had to go. Excuse me if this seems stupid or obvious but underneath the brakes, a rear axle with disx brakes is the same as one with drums, so if I was going to get a complete set of discs and rotors, would I really need a drum to disc conversion kit or could I simply get a complete four wheel disk brake kit?

the axle flanges and backing plates are different, so other OEM parts will not bolt up. You can get conversion parts from Flynbye.com, but usually you loose the parking brake.
What works pretty well if you are mechanicaly inclinded and dont mind a little work, is to swap the disc brakes from a 98-02 camaro/fbird. You have to remove the drums, make a couple small cuts, drill out a few holes and they will bolt right up and are quite nice brakes. parking brakes requires some modification to the cables, or you can get conversion cables from flynbye ore hawks, for about 100 bux.

you have to pull the axles to do this, like any brake swap.
I've done this to both my cars and its pretty straight forward.
You should also swap the factory proportioning valve for the late style 1le valve, or a adjustable one to get the brakes working properly.
you can usually find the complete brake setup on ebay for under 200 bux.
Or you can just swap the entire axle to the 98-02 one, get the brakes and possible a limited slip diff. But these rears are about 2" wider on each side, so it will move your 3rd gen wheels out 2" each side.
