1LE brake owners, opinions?
This is directed to those that either have the factory 1LE brake option or who bought and installed the SSBC 1LE brake package.
How do you like the 1LE brakes? Do they perform really well? Comparable to a 4th gen as far as stopping power? Your thoughts?
My car is a 89 IROC, does not have the 1LE package but it does have the 12" rear disc brakes. I bought the SSBC 1LE kit but have not yet installed it, just wanted some opinions so I know what to expect.
Thanks!
Mike

Re: 1LE brake owners, opinions?
i have the front setup on my 92, not from the factory, i added it. they are great brakes, period.
ls1 calipers are a bit larger, and a slightly better design overall, but they are in the same ballpark. Use really good brake pads and they are even better.
either will be a good choice. the 1le will move the wheels out a little bit further than the ls1 kit will, and the 1le has larger outer wheel bearings than what you would be using on the ls1 conversion hub. not that it matters to you, but the 1le brakes clear the firebird crosslace wheels, the ls1 brakes dont AFAIK
FWIW, i will be selling my 1le front setup, complete from spindles to flex hoses with only a couple thousand miles later this winter. Upgrading to something stupid...
I can make you a pretty good deal on them and save you some bux if interested. Bolt on and go.

Re: 1LE brake owners, opinions?
1LE brakes are fantastic. With Hawk HP+ pads, Delco solid rotors, and race tires the R7U car would stop like a dog on a chain every time and never fade at our local track. Bit of a roasting smell from 120 mph but the Porsches would smoke at that, too.
I have LS1 brakes on the front of the 92 Formula; tried the GTA wheels on and they fit just fine with stock calipers. Close, but they fit.

Stock brakes are a joke, 1LE are a nice upgrade, but if you really want to stop right now...http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...1-22200150.jpg

Re: 1LE brake owners, opinions?
well, i actually have both! ls1 up front and 1le in back. And either one is a vast improvement over stock brakes. Getting parts for the ls1 is easy and cheap. I was having issues with the rear on my 87, so we just stuffed the entire rear end out of a 89 1LE car under it. Brakes work great, and the harder you have to stop, the harder they grab. Very streetable.

Pads like hawk hp, good fluid like ATe super blue, oem or good blank rotors are great with 1LE calipers

Re: 1LE brake owners, opinions?
It's the Baer kit made for third gens. It was the top of the line when I ordered it. 14" 2pc rotors and their 6S calipers. Came fully assembled on modified spindles. And I bought them to replace my stock 1LE brakes.

Re: 1LE brake owners, opinions?
For what application exactly would you need anything better than the stock 1LE brakes with good pads? If they were good enough for the Player's Challenge series, they are way overkill already for any normal citizen's street application. Unless you have doubled your horsepower and traction, I think both of you Baer guys wasted your money.
If you did it for the bling, however, that's totally your bizniss.

Re: 1LE brake owners, opinions?
I did not know they made a bolt.on 3rd gen kit with that caliper. That's cool. The set I bought was a s10 kit, it was dirt cheap too. I can sell the s10 drop spindles and aluminum hubs and make the kit cost me peanuts. I don't know what offset the 3rd gen kits rotor has but this one is over 1" and that's going to work great with my custom hub setup. My calipers are a light goldish color.

Re: 1LE brake owners, opinions?
I have Baer 2piece 13" rotors on all 4 corners on my 89 Formula350 and its better than the stock 1LE setup. I have melted the 12" 1le rotors B4. Heavy street car melts em fast on 200mph-0 stops.
It only has the standard Baer/1LE 2 piston caliper on front and stock 89 1LE caliper on the rear. but I have the BAER 4 corner 6piston stuff eyeballed 4 it.
I also have a OE 1LE setup on a 92 Formula 305 5sp

Re: 1LE brake owners, opinions?
Well this year, I am finally going to instally my NOS 1LE spindles now that tax refund is coming. Going to buy the brake kit from Spohn. Looking forward to it too since I wont be rubbing my Ronal R15's up front anymore. lol. Btw, going to be running the rear with the stock drums until I can install the 1LE's at rear along with a 3.42 Eaton rear end.

Re: 1LE brake owners, opinions?
thats good to know! i had to order the f-body caliper mounts, and they were a lot cheaper than i was expecting, which is great. If the kit is setup with the 1le offset, that also makes my life a lot easier, less fabrication involved in piecing everything together.

Re: 1LE brake owners, opinions?
Guys I have a situation. Low mile 89 GTA. I want to 1LE for originality purposes even without actual 1LE spindles who would know that other than you guys.
But the LS1 brakes are like .10 larger rotors and each caliper piston is .250 larger x 2.
But the LS1 will require a spacer likely and the 1LE wont.........
What do you think ?
Besides the parts availibilty issues..................

Ls1 brakes are better than the 1le in every way, so it would be a better option if you don't mind the spacer
