Are you swapping complete rear ends or do you wish to put discs on the drum rear? What years are involved?

Here's primer that should answer many of your questions:

If you're putting an 82-88 rear in a 90+ car the combination valve from the 82-88 won't fit. The tube nut threads are different. Check the 10-Bolt FAQ sticky for brake info.

It will work, but for best brake performance, the correct valve is the best bet.

Re: Rear disc conversion question

Correct being one from a disc car, not necessarily aftermarket right?

I ask because I have a 4th gen disc rear going in my 83 'bird and need to know myself!

Yes. That said, your 83 will have SAE threads. The correct valve will be metric, so you may have to go the after market route.

Re: Rear disc conversion question

Or just cut the ends off and re-flare with metric ones... wouldn't that be easier?
