Re: aluminum drums

by no way is this , my comment a slam . I have never understood the desire/need for aluminum drums . sure they are a little lighter , but enough to matter for performance ? (I don't think so) polish up nice ? O.K. , i'll give you that . used ones are not able to be turned (in most cases) more than once . finding NOS ones , impossible (at a reasonable price) . so why , are they sought after ? a few months ago I did my rear brakes . bought new drums , cleaned casting slag , took to machine shop to assure true . after very lite touch-up had them hot tanked . took back to my shop primed and painted with hi-temp cast alum. paint . I'm happy with appearance , good luck .

well, im putting my car back to the way it was when made.mine came with aluminum drums ,so that is why I went after replacements. so far after 5 years of work ,I need very little to have it complete. nothing missing anywhere.and with every component working as intended. not a restoration per se. just a complete fun driver

Re: aluminum drums

Ok, I'd save the 800 and put it towards a disk brake conversion. Money better spent.

I got mine for $20 for the pair at the pick and pull by me. For 20 bucks I wouldnt care if they were good or not. Turns out they were pretty much perfect. After installation I noticed that braking was better. Whether that was due to bad steel drums ill never know.

For $20, it was money well spent. As for the reason for aluminum drums; rotational weight is more than static weight. Not much of a difference I might add, but alum driveshaft and drums in concert should in theory be better, though you may never feel the difference.

When building a street/strip or drag car every pound of weight savings is very helpful. I have junkyard alum drums. on mine that I got for $15 for the pair at a local yard. I weighed both sets. My pair of iron drums was 29 lbs and alum pair was 20 lbs.

So 9 lbs of rotating weight is a good bit in the end for a drag car. It adds up quick. Rotating weight has 2-5 times the effect on accel/ET/Performance than dead weight.

The old rule of thumb is 100 lbs of static (dead) weight = 1/10th second drop in 1/4 mile ET.
10 lbs of dead weight has the same effect on performance as 1 HP.

Yes, one looks like it has a small groove in it, they came off of running cars.
I'm not much on rear drums.
I have about the same money in em as the Hawks parts cost
PM me if you or anyone wants them.
