Problem with drum brakes

Got new brakes all around (rotors/pads in the front and drums/shoes in the rear) and the first time I took it for a drive after finishing these up, it lost all fluid in the rear. Opened it up and the new wheel cylinder had become mis-aligned with the shoe so that it was just squirting brake fluid all over the place. Tried to put everything back in place and it looks like the wheel cylinder and shoes don't line up properly. Anyone else have experience with this happening or what I can do to correct this? Works fine on passenger side.

Re: Problem with drum brakes

You replaced the wheel cylinders right?
Do they seem loose against the backing plate?
In other words, Is the spring clip you put in from the backside holding the cylinder tight against the backing plate?

Sounds like the spring clip for the WC isn't on all the way.

Go back and check your work. Whatever the details turn out to be, it's basically impossible for that to happen if everything is properly assembled.

Re: Problem with drum brakes

I found the problem. The clip was on fine, but trying to put it on i dented the back plate. Gotta get that flattened and it should all line up fine. Just having trouble getting that off. Got the two lower screws out fine, but the one on the top I can't get. Sprayed it with PB blaster and used a 1.5 food ratchet on the back and a 1in wrench on the front. Can't get it to break loose. Any suggestions?

The plate for the drums. Not the one that's part of the axel. It's glorified sheet metal.

Heat, works almost every time. Then once you get everything apart clean up the threads with a wire brush or wire wheel.

And by heat I don't mean a propane torch from Lowe's. Oxy/Acetylene!
