4 line vs 5 line brake hose kit

Hi everyone,

I'm putting together a 10 bolt and need brake lines and hoses. I see some manufacturers sell a 4 brake and a 5 brake hose kit high performance. Presumably the 5th brake hose connects between the rear left caliper and the brake hard line, right?

To save myself hassle in the future when I have to change rear pads I'd like a setup where I have brake hoses going to both the left and right rear calipers. Was this a factory option? This must be the 5 brake hose high performance option, right? Who sells the lines and hoses for this? I emailed SSTube but they have never replied and other places I've seen appear to sell brake lines for the entire car, rather than just the differential.

Thanks,

The 5th brake hose is the small flexible hose that goes on the differential at the center joint before it T's off to both sides. I would recommend installing it so you don't have a weak link there.

This sounds like the brake hose that goes between the differential and the rest forward facing part of the car. The only way I can think of a car needing 5 brake hoses is two for the front wheels, one that connects up to the differential and then T's off (what you said), one on the rear left caliper and then the 5th one on the rear right caliper.

Would this be right?

Re: 4 line vs 5 line brake hose kit

4-line = 82-88 system (Saginaw): on one side, the steel line goes directly to the caliper w/o a rubber hose... very odd indeed in the grand scheme of things

5-line = 89-92 (PBR): rubber lines at all 4 corners, plus the one at the pumpkin

Thanks, this is what I thought.

However, what's confusing is that some suppliers offer the 5 line brake hose kit for pre-89 vehicles. Hawks Motorsport for example offer this. Another, Classic Tube, offer the 5 line kit for 88-92 cars, and another 5 line kit for 85-88 cars.

How to make sense of this?

As previously stated, I'm wishing to have a brake system that has the 5 line brake host kit using the non-PBR factory calipers. This should be possible, yes?

Would be eeeeezy enough to offer a 5-line kit for the Saggy system, just by putting a bubble flare on the end of the one. I avoid that system like the bubonic plague mixed with Ebola, malaria, and an STD, though; wouldn't put it on my car if it was free; no clue whether that's what actually comes in the package.

Re: 4 line vs 5 line brake hose kit

Unfortunately I can't really upgrade my brakes to something bigger because they won't fit under my 14" rims, and replacing rims of course costs lots as well.

But thank you, I'll go with a 5 line hose kit. When it comes time to having to take off the rear left caliper at least I can leave it connected to the braking system via a hose rather than totally disconnecting it from the hard line.

Cheers

14" rims
And here I thought you actually gave a rip how your brakes work. Silly me.

In 2016? Really? with the tires you can buy, today? Those are what... Kia Spectra tires? MAYBE? Or maybe only ... Iunno ... Frod Fiesta tires?

Fix your wheel problem. Then if you REALLY care about brakes, you'll be in a better place. And the # of hoses will then ... actually ... matter. Instead of having no traction whatsoever and no matter what brakes you have you just slide into the rear bumper of the car in front of you on the highway when the wildlife jumps out in front of the car in front of you.

Re: 4 line vs 5 line brake hose kit

If by tyres you mean rims then I'm afraid it's not as simple as buying bigger rims and tyres to accommodate bigger/better brakes. They stopped making the rims I have a long time ago and they only went as large as 15" in that style (and for what I'm doing I need a specific style) and getting a set of those is expensive and is made worse by having to add international freight on top - so yes, in 2016. I'd have to consider having someone manufacture bigger rims especially which of course is not cheap. In another time if I had the money, then yes, I certainly would. But for now I have to kinda work with what I've got.

You've got ROH wheels not too far away from you in Australia. Affordable cast aluminum wheels with timeless styles for our cars.

I still have my ROH wheels that I bought 16 years ago. My wheel is no longer imported into the US. I'll bet you have access to more choices in that brand.

ROH wheels look pretty slick. However I need to stick with factory turbo cast rims for my application.
