Newbie at brakes.. gap between bearing and seal on front rotor?
Hey everyone,
so I purchased all the parts to do the front rotors on my bird, and ran into an issue. (Idk if it is or not, hopefully you guys can clarify)
I bought the advance auto special rotors with the races pre installed. When I put the new inner bearing in, and the seal over it, I noticed a gap that' about 1/4" .
is this normal? Should there be a gap at all? I read somewhere that I should pack this gap with grease, but I don't know what to trust. It' my first time ever doing brakes (id rather let the pros do it.) So idk if it' normal or not.
thanks for the help in advance guys!

If it's what I think it is, that's normal.

You're supposed to pack the new bearings with grease before you put them in.
You don't pack any kind of "gap" involving the seal. Just the bearing itself.
The seals aren't supposed to touch the bearings, or really even, be anywhere close. ¼" sounds fairly reasonable as far as how much room the bearings have to waller around in there before you put the rotor on the spindle. Probably once it's all together though, the seal and bearing will be within 1/8" or so of each other.
You might need to take the bearings back out and actually pack them BEFORE putting them in and installing seals on top of them. You'll have to buy new seals in that case. Good thing they're VERY small $$ and readily available at EVERY parts store ALL the time.
Make sure you pack the outer bearings before putting those in, as well.
