Hand brake doesn’t go high enough

So I’m trying to remove the center console from my 1986 IROC-Z but the hand brake won’t pull high enough for the console to clear the dash. I really don’t want to remove the dash so how do I get the hand brake to pull higher?

You have to remove the plastic piece on the end of the handle first. Then lift the back of the console up.You may have to twist the console to the side to get it off. Sometimes It's easier to do if you have the seats out.

Thank you for your input, I will have to try removing the button.
I’ve tried lifting the back and twisting, but the slot for the brake hits about half way up the handle. In the videos I’ve seen their brakes pull higher and was wondering if there was a way to adjust that.

Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Hand brake doesn’t go high enough

You can get up under the car and let the cable adjuster out.

You don't have to remove the button just the plastic cover that goes around the handle itself. Or do what Sofa said.

This will control the travel in your handle. Pics are worth 1000 words as they say. We don't know how high your brake handle is moving. All the advice is accurate, but if someone adjusted your brake handle too tight over the years, you may still not be getting it high enough to just take off the handle. If you remove the handle and still can't get the correct angle to clear, adjusting the equalizer is the thing to do. Some folks hate that I bent a wrench to do this, but it is oh so easy this way. .

Thank you Kyle. This is very helpful, especially with the picture.
