paint job

spoke with the guy who is painting my car and I guess he will be finished all the wet sanding tommorrow night.
Anyways he sand blasted and die grinded rusted areas. sealed with areas with epoxy.

He said he put 4 colors of the base color (????WTF 4) and 3 coats of clear. and he did the black areas too. also he painted in the door jam areas and under the hatch areas and also under the hood. Guess I'll be picking it up thursday and I'll post some pics.

Anyways he is charging me 1800 bucks which is pretty cheap in Calgary. He is also a professional industrial painter and does cars on the side.

Anyways if anybody is interested give a holler.

Re: paint job

he did some not bad body work on a small dent and vfixed up the rust and **** but the runs and fish eyes are driving me crazy also all the crap under the paint. he loaded on the clear coat and the base.

the car actuall looks preety damn good from far but you get up close and look just a little hard and its there.

anyways my neighbor is a hot rodder too with a grand national all modified to hell and back and he looked and it and said it wasnt that bad and hes a picky dude.

anyways I'll get back to the dude this week and see what he has to say to fix it or something. I really wanted to to fix the rust and get a couple of coats of paint. Thew rust wasnt that bad and if i had the time and a garage I would have done it myself.

Re: paint job

yeah it includes all the prep work and materials as well.

4 coats of base and a lot of clear.

he sand blasted rusted areas and used an epoxy sealer. also used a die grinder as well.

It also depends on the condition of your car as well. I could have gotten away with doing myself and use a color matched rattled and and do a pretty decent job, but I figured to let him give it a go. hes got 25 hours of labour into it easy. Anyways any pictures i have up they were taken two months a ago

he works out of his garage and he does this on the side. he had my car for 3 weeks.

Re: paint job

hows he doing with the fix ups for you?

fortunately white is good at hiding things, a darker color tends to show it more so

i've ben considering doing it myself too, like you said
i did on an old mustang of mine, got the paint & clear from napa paints, did one panel/section at a time
the paint cans they mix are larger quanitity, and have the better spray nozzle on them
afterwards i wet-sanded the paint, and then clear coated it
next time i think i would wet sand the clear and polish it out, but at that time it was pretty intimidating to me to sand the clear, for fear of ruining things LOL

Re: paint job

ya gotta sand in between coats kind of like polishing, if you get any dirt under one coat and dont sand it smooth it will build up like my car did in spots.

I am very close to putting up a double car garage on my corner lot and doing my own painting next time

Re: paint job

thats right, and each color coat i did was wet sanded, the clear coat was pretty thick, and went one at once (fortunately didnt run)
i think it of looked even better to wet sand it, and then power polished it out

Re: paint job

what is exactly power polishing? there maybe enough clear on there to polish most of the crap out.

Re: paint job

its using a high speed polisher, using cutting paste & then polishing out afterwards

i've not done more than the basic polishing (compound) for detailing, but they do the same on final clear coat when hardened

i dont know if that'd fix your particular issues though, being that the fisheyes, etc. are right in the base (paint) layer

i do know to cover those, the base has to be wet sanded down a fair bit, then several coats additional to mask, that maybe? why he put on several base coats, but 4 isn't a terrible amount, as 7-8 might be extreme

Re: paint job

I may just get a power polish for now. I am kind of getting forced into more and more into getting a garage. And kind of in the process of thinking how big and the work shop I want. What I'd like to do now is take it apart and restore it and learn how to paint it myself. I got two other cars I drive and a company truck so I wouldnt be out of a ride. Anyways the parking situation sucks and I live on acorner lot. I am waiting to talk to the painter to see what he wants to do about his bad paint job on my car.

Re: paint job

its unlikely he can do anything about it now, since its already clear coated, unfortunately
i'd say at the very least, make him make some compensation, like repayment of portion for shatty work
later on, once you have a work space, you could then (winter project) wet sand out the clear coat, and respray the base, then clear it over again?
